Title: heating hose broken  engine boiling.
Post by noel on Jan 22nd, 2009, 10:56pm
hi there experts and enthusiasts,
Getting near the end of a 60 mile drive I noticed that the heating controls were not achieving the desired result, ie first it was too hot then I cut the temp down to bottom and it responded ok cutting off the heat. After several minutes I was too cold so I put them up again but this time nothing changed. I drove on and soon after that when I got off the motorway and came almost to a halt there was a sudden boiling over with a heavy cloud of steam rising from all round the bonnet. I stopped immediately and shut engine off. After it cooled down I saw that the hose from the heater to the front of the engine was completely snapped.  the rubber hose had been joined by a rigid pipe with two clips where the break occurred about half way on the hose.
Got taken into a mechanics place and he repaired the break, replaced the thermostat with a Ford stat (not a scorpio one) and topped it up. All appeared normal but later on driving I noticed there was a lot of condensation inside and the engine appeared to be firing erratically at times then reverting to normal.
next day it started boiling again and I let it cool down then topped it up and got home. just a few miles away.
Today I topped it up again and the thermostat housing is cracked and profusely leaking.
Obviously I will replace that but is there anything else involved that my man is missing?

Anybody know what I did wrong and if I have done harm. Thanks in advance.

hi there

you need to give us a bit more information.

by the sound of it, it's the 2.3 engine.

the head gasket could be blown.

Just got another man to look at it and its the manifold that is fractured not the thermostat housing as I first said.
water was pouring out near the front end of it where it meets the housing.

hi there

you can repair them, but the better solution is to replace it.

a new manifold from ford is very expensive, but you can use one from the 2.3 galaxy.

you just need to swap over the brass inserts from the scorpio manifold to the galaxy one.

can you suggest why the hose blew apart first then the manifold blew.
Just wondering what caused these to blow.

hi there

i would imagine a build up of pressure on the old hose (+10 years old).
i'd say the manifold went first (small leak to start), maybe with a failing thermostat, which created localised steam which blew the hose.

remember this is only an idea.

i'd also get the head/head gasket checked before doing the manifold. i've just had to replace engine & manifold in the summer because of a similar issue. the next thing to happen to mine was oil in the coolant. :(

something to look out for.

I had the same last year with the hose coming apart. I noticed a slight leak on the hose at the join & when I went to feel it the two hoses just came apart. The bit of plastic pipe holding the two parts of hose together had become so old & brittle it just snapped & broke up into small pieces. It took me a while to scrape all the bits of broken plastic out of the hoses.

Luckily my car wasn't running at the time so no over-heating damage occured & it was just a matter of re-joining the hoses with a new plastic connector & re-filling the coolant  :)

This is obviously a problem as these car get older & in hindsight I should have written something about it at the time. Maybe it's time everyone started to check their old plastic hose connectors before it's too late & some serious damage occurs  :)

I wonder if the joiner was inserted into the hose as some kind of fuse that would break before something more serious happened.
Ford must have had a reason for putting that rigid plastic as a joiner within the rubber hose. Any suggestions?
you guys were lucky. Mine broke and may have done damage.
Pity as the Scorpio is such a lovely comfortable and economical smart motor.

agreed but why did the car designers not just put in a complete hose?

I think readers of this thread should check out their cars and replace that dodgy pipe before it falls apart.
