Title: 12v Autobox whine
Post by ohms on Jan 24th, 2009, 8:11pm
Hi all,

My 2.9 12 valves auto box has developed a whine at about 50 mph.

The box has been flushed with new filter and new oil and changes up and down through all the gears without fault. it's silky smooth in fact and I can't fault it's operation, but over the last 1000 miles it has started to develop a whine at about 50 mph, it's not bad, and seems to get louder when i take my foot off the accelerator and allow it to coast, and seems to come in and out when the cruise control is balancing the speed going down an incline etc.

I have very little experience of auto boxes and wondered what peoples opinions are. It's not excessively loud, in fact, nobody but me would even notice it, a very faint whine.

Thanks in advance :)

Its most likely the pump that's whining after being cleaned.
Sometimes they go it when its cold and struggle to pump the fluid round .

You may have noticed the gearbox might be a little sluggish, perhaps a loud turbine noise when moving off from rest: this is the ATF pump trying to pull fluid through. (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/autogearbox.htm)
that  quote does not apply to you directly but gives you a clue as to the origin of the whine. The ATF PUMP is the most likely cause especially after it has been cleaned and new fluid  etc. IMHO Nothing to worry about .

Could also point towards being diff/driveshaft wear.  Bit hard to be certain without hearing it personally.
