Title: rear drive noise
Post by miike on Feb 16th, 2009, 8:47pm
I have  noise which appears to be coming from the rear. nearside. It is apparent at 30mph or less and appears to be related to roadspeed, an oscillating whine/rumble.  Hence I suspect the rear drive shafts or wheel bearings, but which?
R reg 2.3 Ultima - 130.000 miles.

I had a problem with the nearside drive shaft outer rubber boot a couple of years ago. The boot had split.  This caused a noise at very low speeds, ie. in carparks. I had the outer boots replaced and the drive shaft bearings regreased. Its not another split boot, I've checked. It seems a more mechanical sound, a slightly more worrying sound this time.

Any one any experience of the same?  Advice on how to identify the cause?

If it goes 'clonk clonk clonk' then it will be a CV joint.
Confirm which one - usually outer - by grabbing the driveshaft and trying to move it around - any play and you've found the culprit. Quite simple to change.
Whining is normally a wheel bearing. Not difficult to do but you need a biggish torque wrench.

No, it's not the clonk clonk that you can get from the CV joints.  I had a Ganada, D reg, before the scorpio. Bought it 3years old at 97.000 miles, CV joints started playing up at 110.000 miles, yes clonking, it was very impressive. The grease in the CV joints looked like it had dried up. Regreasing cured it for a few months, but ultimately I ended up replacing all 4 joints. My one major expense on that car (exhausts and tyres excluded) until at near on 200,000 and 8 years later I traded it in for the 2 year old scorpio.

Sounds like a wheel bearing then.
Not always easy to detect play in these but a fairly common problem.
Best get it looked at asap.

You need to jack the wheel up off the ground to check the wheel bearing
