Title: Lack of power?
Post by Bikerdon on Mar 2nd, 2009, 8:03pm
Hi again, my 2.0l ultima auto will no longer rev beyond 4000rpm, it runs perfectly well below that. Plugs and filters are new, fuel shut off loom is ok. MAF has been cleaned as well. Engine is smooth and quiet and idles nicely. Am I correct in thinking that this points towards a blocked cat, I have checked everything else I can think of, ie, pipes blown off due to back pressure etc, have checked EGR valve as well and all is in order. guessing - check autobox turbine speed sensor, there might be a software limiter in EEC for it, and if you get wrong reading (higher then the reality), EEC should restrict the engine revs. Also depend on the variant of yours autobox.
I'm also not sure if you should expect the reading from tss to be same as the actual engine revs are, even if your car would be ok.
Don't know if this actually produces any DTC.

also - check you ignition system (just having load of trouble with it now) - check pip signal together with HV signal.

blocked cat - never had this, but I suppose (again) that you won't have nice idling (or even if, then it won't run nicely  up to 4k).

Hi scorpio_man, that would be brilliant if you could do that for me, unfortunately due to work commitments the soonest I could meet up with you would be on Friday afternoon after 2pm, or anytime over the weekend would also be fine. I would be quite happy to meet wherever else might suite you as well if that helps. Seems like every time I solve one issue something else pops up to keep me busy, still love the car though and wouldnt part with it. Bikerdon.

hi there

how did you get on?

is it pulling any better with the different coil packs?

here are some new ones on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-ESCORT-RS-SCORPIO-2-0-2-3-16V-IGNITION-COIL-NEW_W0QQitemZ250215126242QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item250215126242&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318).

Hi scorpio_man, well its still struggling to pass 4k under load in anything other than first gear, but it does seem be a little bit more responsive at lower revs now. I have also noticed a slight occasional miss at tickover so going to whip the plugs out and recheck the gap on them as well. Biggest problem is getting the time and dry weather to do anything major on it. Thank you so much for your time and advice on Friday, its very much appreciated and certainly has given me a few good pointers to solving the issue. Well spotted on the coils on ebay, might just pay out for them. Will keep you posted on progress and get your parts back to you as soon as I can. Bikerdon.

hi there

yep, sounds like you have 2 issues.

coil pack(s) breaking down under load and the cat brick moving about and blocking the flow.

re the coil packs on ebay. that's who i got mine from.

let us know how you get on.
