Title: ABS Controller modulator/pump
Post by parvaman on Mar 5th, 2009, 8:45am
Hello,

I'm new to this forum and am hoping someone can give me some advice.
I'm the owner of a silver Scorpio Ghia X 16v 2.3 Estate 1998 model and its been a great car to own. However, recently the ABS light came on and stayed on. Took it to a garage and they have confirmed that the complete ABS module/pump needs replacing and we are looking at a substantial bill to do the work to get it replaced. Unfortunately its also an MOT failure point.
I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get the required parts either second hand or cheaper than a Ford dealer. I'm not technical so couldn't fit it myself but could probably find someone to do the job.
Any help/advice appreciated.

parvaman.
You have the later type ABS unit, the module being mounted to the front of it by four bolts. It is very easy and quick to replace, there are currently lots of Scorps in the breakers, and you will be able to find one,ask him to put his mark on it in case it's faulty and you need to return it.

Where abouts are you located ?. As GOZZ says this is a simple 'swop' if it is fitted on the front of the unit.  Some earlier ones are underneath and require a bit more work. There is a known 'issue' with these units which is documented on the site. HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/abscontrollerrepair.htm) If the ABS lght goes OFF when you turn the ignition on BUT then comes on again at about 10mph it is just a dodgy connection in the controller. The controller thinks the motor is not functioning when in fact it simply is not getting power because of the joints failing. You can test the motor by removing the two pin plug which connects it to the controller and applying 12v to it. If the motor runs then it's 99.9% going to be a 'duff' connection.  ;)
THIS photo (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/absimage14.jpg) shows the motor connection although this one is from the earlier 'underneath'unit it will show you what I'm talking about.

Hi - thanks for the prompt replies - appreciate it.
I am located in Birmingham.
The ABS light is always on from the moment I start up the engine and stays on. The guy who looked at it tested the ABS controller module and said it was dead. It looks like a black box and when you turn it over it has 6 cylinder coils in it (3 black and 3 yellow) and some electrical connections. Ford part number = 97GG-2C013-AA. The part is currently out of the car. He implied though that the whole unit needs replacing (including the pump?). Sorry my knowledge is a bit sketchy on the subject. This guy who tested it has tried a few breakers but with no luck. If anyone knows any nearby to try, please let me know. I'm not completely sure what to ask for though.
Apart from this problem, the car is in great nick!

hi there

the same error code (1095 iirc) can make the abs light stay on (fails start up and the 10mph tests), on the newer mkII controller.

i get it every now and then. it eventually goes away, but you can give the big multi-plug and wiggle and that might clear it. otherwise it's soldiering the pins time.

i'd check all this out first before getting a new/2nd hand controller.

hi  there

which system do you have?

the one on the 2.3 (newer mkII) or the one on the 2.5td (older system)?

Its the 2.3 Litre 16V DOHC 4 Cylinder, so the newer one I guess.
The ABS module is on the front

hi there

did you look at the photos?
i'd say you're talking about the newer system with the controller underneath and to the front of the car.

print out the page from the link simmo has posted and give to your mechanic or auto electrician. they should be able to fix it quite easily.

if it doesn't fix, then you need to go for a replacement, but not before trying the fix. ;)

Yes I think its is the newer one from description given.
The ABS light comes on immediately though after ignition and stays on even when the car is stationary so is it still worth checking the potential fault you pointed me to in the Simmo link? At no point does it flicker on and off.

hi there

yep, try the fix first.

it's was a great discovery by Dave H and has saved a few members a lot of money.

The part no. you give is for the later unit.
Bit of a bonus getting the controller off - the securing bolts for these can chew up, so don’t over tighten them when you put them back.

Did the garage read the codes?
Getting the codes read is the best way to go.

Once there is a code on the later units the light will stay on until it passes the rolling test (when all components pass the test by the controller at a speed around 20mph).

As mentioned in a previous post 1095 is the code you normally get with a failed controller.
My impression is that failure of the valve block and/or the motor is unusual (don’t remember reading a post of them failing).

You can test with a meter one of the motor pins on the controller for continuity.

Try flexing the pin on the motor socket whilst you’re testing as it may only break down under load.

I’ve looked at 7 controllers with a permanent 1095 code & they all worked after resoldering the 2 motor pins inside the controller.

Hi Dave (Tompian)

Thanks very much for the reply - I feel I'm getting somewhere with this now. I tried the 12V battery test on the motor connection and that is working OK, I could hear the motor turning so the earlier post said it was about 99.9% certain that it would be a dodgy connection
My techie knowledge and DIY skills at repairing (soldering) this unit would not be good and I am running out of time before MOT is due. I was wondering if you or someone would be willing to do the soldering job for me for a small fee if I was to send the control module unit. I don't really have the tools at my disposal to do the job. At least then I'll have tried the soldering fix before looking to purchase a second hand replacement.

Well it's only 99% certain if you're getting a 1095 code - assuming the garage is correct and the problem isn't with the wheel sensors, wiring etc.
I don't mind having a look, for a donation to the site.

Also check the ABS fuses.
Fuse 27 in the central fuse box also controls the Airbag so in theory if your airbag light goes out that should be OK.

Fuses 46 & 47 in the auxiliary fuse box are ABS, one will produce a 1095 code if blown - can't remember which.
If you test for voltage at the controller multiplug (the 4 big pins) note they are permanently live.

Parvaman. I can only say you are totally safe hands if Dave checks it out for you and his offer is typical of his generosity. If you lived nearer he'd probably do it in the pub car park at the next Kent meet!!. :D ;D

And you'll probably get it back quicker than Simmo has }{ - now where did I put it :-[  :o

Paul

You had 3 codes:
C1175 Speed wheel sensor left rear input circuit failure.
C1095 Hydraulic pump motor circuit failure.
C1267 ABS functions temporarily disabled.

I soldered the pins and tested it on my car. The light went out as soon as I turned on the ignition – even with all 3 codes still there it didn’t need to pass the rolling test before the light went out.
I have now cleared the codes.

So C1095 is fixed, hopefully it will have fixed C1267 (not had this one before so don’t really know, but having looked for it on the net it looks possible the 2 could be linked).
As for the C1175, you may need to do some work on the left rear sensor, but with any luck it’ll be an old code that hasn’t been cleared.

Thanks to Dave's efforts, his work seems to have done the trick. My ABS light has been extinguished! Mank thanks to Dave and all others for the great advice and help.
