Title: rear wheel grinding noise Post by trol on Mar 8th, 2009, 8:00pm I'm hearing a grinding noise at the rear wheel lately. It seems it's getting louder every time I drive the car :-/ It's one "grind" in one turn of the wheel. It's not there when braking or accellerating, only when 'rolling". I would think it's the brake disc, but I don't feel anything strange while braking. What do you guys think? |

Title: Re: rear wheel grinding noise Post by taliban aka Cheekyboy2 on Mar 9th, 2009, 1:14pm almost deffo the wheel bearing, normally the drivers side, for some reason the 'boffins' at ford made them out of recycled tin cans then plonked 2 tonne of car on em, its a common fault.......... |

Title: Re: rear wheel grinding noise Post by taliban aka Cheekyboy2 on Mar 9th, 2009, 6:38pm when you or a garage put them on make sure they're torqued to the specific amount, it is high about 200lb from what i remember, failure to do this WILL result in them failing a few months down the line... |

Title: Re: rear wheel grinding noise Post by gozz on Mar 9th, 2009, 7:25pm trol. Make very sure that the hubs are not worn, both bearings each side should be a firm press fit,if not there is a severe chance of premature failure. GOZZ. |

It is 200ft/lbs and the further advice is to have them re-checked after a couple of hundred miles as they have been known to work loose even with the correct torque and loctite. ;) |

Title: Re: rear wheel grinding noise Post by trol on Mar 14th, 2009, 3:36pm I'm almost done on one side but I can't get the brake caliper to go in. I realized I left the parking brake on while I removed the caliper. Any ideas? :-[ |

Title: Re: rear wheel grinding noise Post by Jonnycab on Mar 14th, 2009, 8:21pm The piston should wind in clockwise ;) |

Title: Re: rear wheel grinding noise Post by Simmo on Mar 14th, 2009, 9:07pm The rear pistons WIND back. You cannot press them back as with the front ones and ideally you need a 'wind back tool' which can be aquired for a few pounds. It is possible to use a pair of long nosed pliers BUT the correct tool makes life far easier. ;) Have a look at This page (http://www.draper.co.uk/Pages/Pagesource/p78.pdf) from the Draper catalogue. Works a treat. ;) |

Sorry, should have said....'The piston should wind in clockwise while applying pressure' :) The item Simmo is referring to is called a 'brake cube' & if you search ebay, is for sale for as little as £3.99. But if your in a hurry for one, then a good local motor factor should have them in stock :) |

Title: Re: rear wheel grinding noise Post by joe-satch on Mar 15th, 2009, 8:56am when replacing rear pads on my mk3,i use a g-clamp and a pair of curved jaw mole grips.the g-clamp puts pressure on the piston and the mole grips wind in the piston, after a few turns i retighten the g-clamp to keep the pressure on the piston,i do this until the piston is back in the caliper install new pads, refit caliper,..works everytime :). |
