Title: Re: Cosworth Auto Box whining Post by Tompion on Mar 22nd, 2009, 12:44am Hi Andy Not advisable to fit the 2.3 box as it has less clutch plates. Obviously running out of fluid is not good & there’s no telling what damage may have occurred. A blocked filter can make it whine. Did you change the filter when you refilled the box? In which case did you check the length of the bolt, as the later filters need the bolt shortening or packing out else it won’t seat correctly and can let air in. Have you used the correct fluid & checked the level when it’s hot after a run with the engine still running, parked on a level surface move the selector through all positions then check the level. Title: Re: Cosworth Auto Box whining Post by Andy_Mac on Mar 22nd, 2009, 12:57am Thanks for your help Dave :) I have not had a look at the filter yet but will do tomorrow, will I need a new filter or can I clean the old one, also will I need any gasgets to do the job. The noise only happends in first gear, when it shifts into 2nd there is no sound and the gear change is smooth. Also when cold the box slips badly on take off. Andy |

Title: Re: Cosworth Auto Box whining Post by Andy_Mac on Mar 22nd, 2009, 3:02pm Jacked the car up today and found out what Dave has said, no drain plug. I will get a pump and get rid of the best part of the fluid first. Thanks for the information Dave youve been a great help. |

Title: Re: Cosworth Auto Box whining Post by Dave2302 on Mar 22nd, 2009, 4:43pm Hi The whine in first is not a problem in itself they go on for years like it, it is just wear in the low gearset, but generally they go on for ages. However, the slipping when pulling away is more serious and indicates impending doom, it is almost certainly a worn out forward clutch which will mean box rebuild / replacement, and is probably a direct result of running low on oil. ;) My advice is not to waste your money changeing the oil and filter, put the cost toward another transmission or a rebuild. Title: Re: Cosworth Auto Box whining Post by Andy_Mac on Mar 22nd, 2009, 6:00pm Thanks for the advice Dave2302, I think its time to get another Gearbox, have seen one on a well known auction site for £79, what do you think http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-SCORPIO-COSWORTH-ULTIMA-24V-BOB-AUTOMATIC-GEARBOX_W0QQitemZ220380134836QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item220380134836&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 |

Title: Re: Cosworth Auto Box whining Post by gozz on Mar 22nd, 2009, 11:14pm Andy_Mac. In my experience it's never worth changing a transmission for an unknown one without getting it stripped and checked first, the hardest part is removing and replacing the box,and to do this then discover a problem is,to say the least, very disappointing. If I suspect one of mine is 'not well' we rebuild another, then just do a straight swop complete with new torque converter, the extra expense always pays off in the end. Title: Re: Cosworth Auto Box whining Post by Andy_Mac on Mar 23rd, 2009, 7:24am Cheers Gozz, what would I be the looking for when I open the box up to determine weather its good or needs work. Andy |

Title: Re: Cosworth Auto Box whining Post by gozz on Mar 23rd, 2009, 8:26am Andy. Best to entrust the work to an autobox man,he knows all the wrinkles,he will look at the condition of clutch plates, servo seals, valve O rings etc and general wear.As previously mentioned first gear whine is very common and is not a great worry. You really need to find someone experienced who will do it as a private job,but it will still cost about £4-£500 quid witha torque converter,at least two or three times that if you send it in.You could of course be lucky and find a box that's OK if someone genuine produces one,but remember that unless it has recently had work it could be past it's best. Title: Re: Cosworth Auto Box whining Post by Dave2302 on Mar 23rd, 2009, 1:14pm Hi Andy, I agree with everything Gozz has said. The one in yr link sounds okay, but looks like it is standing outside, and doesn't say if the converter comes with it. It doesn't take long for moisture to wreck an auto if it stands outside. Never change an auto box without the convertor, and always flush out then blow out the cooler lines in both directions. :) If money is tight, give it a go, but if you want to keep the car long term, as Gozz said, get a pro to rebuild it and supply a converter. Also If you've no experience of fitting 'em let the specialist do it as it isn't as easy as you'd first imagine and they are also quite heavy. ;) HTH Regards Dave |
