Title: Lower the front seats?
Post by tlundkvi on Mar 22nd, 2009, 7:03pm
It doesn't bother me (180cm) as much as my wife (187cm), but it seems the clever designers in Germany has made a nice combination of low roof height with unusually high seats in the Scorpio (leather with full electric adjustment). My wife hits her head all the time in the roof. And ofcourse, the seat is as low as it gets.

Recaros would probably solve the problem at the expense of comfort and huge delivery costs as well (living in Finland). The mount looks quite high though, what do you guys think, would it somehow be possible to lower the mount?

Are you sure the seats as low as it goes??
My dad at 6' 5" (197) can sit in Scorpio without hitting his head on the roof.

The full electric ones are a bit fiddley and pressing the button down till it stops moving doesnt necessarily mean its at it lowest setting, I also have to tilt forward and put the seat back and then press it down again to get it to its true lowest position, a little maneouvering is required

I agree with Highlander, you may need the base flatter than you'd like to get it as low as possible.

I can’t remember if this had an effect on the seat height, but it is possible to make the seats go back a bit further by swapping over/turning round the rear mountings (effectively moving the hinge back) this will have an effect on the front double pivot setup but whether that allows the front to go significantly lower I can’t remember.

I am 6' 2" and have no trouble at all with the seat height so it would appear to be the adjustment which is not correct.

Perhaps slowing down over humps anb bumps might stop her hitting roof. Anyway two things should be considered, aslong as no dents appear in roof where her head his thats ok, if she is denting the roof get rid of the wife for an even smaller model.

I am 6' 6 and never had any problems fitting in the scorpio LOADS of head room , sounds like you have not got the seat base right down ...

Probably it is just a coincidence with the scorp, we have had audis, bmws, several vw, an octavia, even a ford ka. Never a similar complaint (let alone the lack of adjustment the KA, that was not good).

The problem is the on the "doorside" of the roof, when she turns her neck when changing lanes etc. to be precise she hits her head on the side. The seats are as low as they get. We tried tilting the back of the seat, but she needs to reach the steering wheel also.

Just to remind, it is also possible to have different proportions of lower body and upper body.

Starting to think of the Queen song "Told my girl, I had to forget her, rather buy me a new..."

Probably the female bottom affects as well :)

The base is as low as it gets, i can barely squeeze a finger between the floor carpet (where it is raised) and the base where the rails etc. are. I could check if there is something stuck there (I don't suspect there is).

It's a matter of strategic 3cm more, now her head is around 2cm from hitting the roof. In the Octavia mkII she has around 10cm. When I sit in the car, there is about 7cm above my head in the scorp.

I have just changed the front seat in my Scorp Estate and it is definitely higher than the last one....though with a bit of fiddling with the electric height adjustment(get is set as low as possible) I can get the seat down far enough for me not to care.

Could it be that in your Scorp the seats have been changed by a previous owner to the leather ones and are just not standard?

I took the seats out of a 1996 Ultima and into a 1997 UItima and the style of the seats we slightly different(not enough for you to notice unless I were to point it out) but they could be a different size or have something extra on the bottom?

I say I did all this.... I mean Big Steve at Spikies Scorpios - the man is a legend

Mine is a 01/1995, it might be that the -97 facelift corrected the seats, or mine was ordered with really strange seats. I don't know. The car has seat memory and all, I believe everything is original.

But still I would say that the scorpio has combined the low roof height with high seats. I would probably need to test drive one of the facelifts to see if it's any different.

Does he have the seat further back than you?
Because the rails slope you get nearer the roof the further forward you are.

I dont think Scorpio's were designed for some members of the Addams family ;)

The solution is in the TIS. "If a customer complains...." - it reads.

Some years after introduction they may have changed the settings of the seat. This can be fixed back, i.e. the seats will be lowered. It is described in TIS. Have a look.
A have a 95 Scorpio and 98 facelift Scorpio. In the 98 the seats are definitely higher. If weather permits (spring time), I will fiddle with the facelift one and will change it as it is described in TIS. It is just more comfortable.
