Title: Fuel economy
Post by Scorpio_Mike on Mar 27th, 2009, 11:05pm
Noticed recently my fuel economy has been dropping a bit.
Currently averaging around 19 - 20mpg with mixed driving - was getting 23 - 24 a few months ago.
I'm quite careful with the ol' right foot, no traffic light GP's

Car is a 2.3 auto Ultima estate.

Any tips of what to check first ?

Injector cleaner may help, but unlikely to make a big difference unless you’ve not used it for a long time.

I recently had a small exhaust leak between the manifold & cat that seemed to drop the mileage by about 2 mpg.

Stat? - does the engine warm up quickly - even if it does a faulty engine temp sender will have an effect.

Faulty ECT or IAT causing cold fueling, or possibly a blocked air filter ?.....also binding brakes  :)

What are ECT & IAT  ???

Brakes not binding, will check MAF + air filter and change plugs.
Oil change was done a few months ago when the car was MOT'd.

Mike. The details of the units are HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/ectdata.htm). The inlet air temperature sensor is fitted,on mine, in the underside of the air trunking just prior to the throttle assembly.  ;)

When i first got the cossie it was doing about 17mpg under mixed driving. changed the plugs, air filter & cleaned the MAF, im now getting about 21mpg with 29.3 at a controlled 65mph. Not too bad in my honest opinion  ::). One thing i have noticed though. If i try & keep the engine under 2000rpm ( yep quite difficult), it makes a world of difference to the economy. Only downside is people behind you keep shoutin "Take your handbrake off " !!!. At 90p per litre they can shout all they like  ;D ;D ;D
