Hi People
My coswoth ultima failed on emissions today 0.41, didnt give it a run or get it warm before I took it there.
I am thinking maybe it was still running on choke maybe.
any help would be much apreceated.

Hard to tell without the data. What was the CO, HC, Lambda, CO2 and O2 values?

1st fast idle test
co % vol 0.30 0.41
hc ppm vol 200 15
lambda 0.95/1.09 1.01

2nd fast idle test
co % vol 0.30 0.38
hc ppm vol 200 13
lambda 0.95/1.09 1.00

natural idle test
co % vol 0.50 0.50

lambda value is correct, so either cat not hot enough, or cat on its way out.

I concur. If it is the cat(s) you'll need an ODB reader to determine if it's the LH, RH or both though.

I think you guys are right, the car has developed a rattle an I suspect it to be the cat.
Are they a pain to fit?

They can be, sometimes they come off easy, sometimes they dont.

Do you know if its both failing or just one?

Changed my LH cat - access was no problem but it did snap a stud on the downpipe bit, so manifold had to come off. Drilled the offending stud out no probs (use a HSS drill bit VERY slowly) and then nut and bolted it back together - couple of hours work tops.

So, remember to buy manifold gaskets in addition to the manifold>cat gasket just in case.

And you're right about the rattle - the car developed a rattle before it affected emmisions.

Im not sure which one is rattling, but driving with both front windows open it sounds like the left hand one.
is there any way i can check without having special equiptment?

Does anybody have a spare cat they would be willing to part with please. I am going to Holland next week for a 7 week contract so need to mot the car before i go.

This seems to be a good price but I dont understand why the ceramic one is cheaper than the steel

BTW. FMD service booklet states 2,3h is needed to replace both cats, and additional 3h is exhaust manifolds need to be taken off. Might be good to know when negotiating fitting price.

Steel ones last MUCH longer.

Yes, but so did the original for me (14 years and 170000km). The steel ones lasts longer, no argue about that, it doesn't crack up before its "consumed" etc. I was more thinking on the lifetime of the car otherwise, the newest are 11 years old already. In this particular case price diff was more than triple.
