Title: MAF access
Post by Jeff on Apr 22nd, 2009, 8:05pm
Hello chaps,
On my 97 facelift 24V I am getting random freak sudden surges of throttle generally under reasonably hard acceleration (away from a roundabout for example). I initially suspected low gearbox oil causing loss of drive and hence loss of load) but that turned out to be ok, so now I suspect our old friend the MAF.
But on mine one of the two screws holding the black plastic connector cover on the housing has a blob of something hard like Araldite preventing a screwdriver being applied.
Can anyone explain what this is for (is it just to prevent casual access?) and any ideas how to remove it?
On my old one I had the same and chipped it away with a bradawl, but this wasn't very satisfactory and left the screw damaged. Can it be dissolved with a soldering iron?

There is NO need to mess with the electrics. Read THIS (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cleanmaf.htm) and simply follow the instructions. Once the unit is removed from the ducting all you have to do is spray the sensor with carb cleaner until bright and shiny. DO NOT attempt to touch it with anything as it is similar to a bulb filament.  :)

Aaah, yes, understood.
In past I have gone in through the top but looking again I see no need for this - guess that's why the screw is locked with the glue stuff. Thanks for your reply Simmo. Appreciate the advice: will be squirting the little devil at the weekend.
