Title: key won't turn
Post by familyguy on Apr 27th, 2009, 3:51pm
Hi

I can't get the key to turn in the ignition, the steering lock is on so the wheels are locked

I did reset the remote fob following the guide on here i had to use the red key as no others will work in the car.

now even the red key won't let me get the ignition on and start the car.

thanks

gaz

looks like the ignition or the keys are worn. try cutting a fresh key and if it doesn't turn you've got an ignitions barrel that needs changing...
there are some sort of magicians that rebuild barrels and locks or set new ones for the old keys so you don't have to change them. don't know how it works, only know that that's a quite common solution on the polish forum.
if you confirm that that this is the ignition i can try to get to know about the rebuild procedure for you so there is no need for changing every lock etc + keys and the immobiliser module...

familyguy.
You can get a barrel rebuild kit from the Ford robber ! As wojtekor says you could try a new key,but that would be unlikely to work if non of your keys fit.To remove the barrel of course it has to be turned with a key to reveal the locking pin,so it sounds like time to remove the whole lock,a bit of violence neds to be brought to bear  :( you could try drilling the barrel out first though.

Gaz. Persevere with the key(s). The red key, unless it has been used on a daily basis should be in new condition. Have you had trouble with the key turning before?. How long ago did you programme the remote?. You may find that wriggling the steering wheel at the same time as trying the key may help, Sometimes the steering lock can hold the wheel really tight and a little movement may help. Likewise with the key. If the lock is worn a certain amount of 'push-pull' on the key can do the trick. As GOZZ says you need to get the lock to turn to Position1 in order to release the lock barrel. Once in that position you can withdraw the lock as it simply comes out on the key itself once the little release peg has been pressed in. A lock rebuild kit costs about £15 and is explained on the site. HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/ignitionlock.htm). You will need a good pair of circlip pliers although a 'friendly' dealer might do it for you for a small fee. :)

thanks all

simmo, i did the reset of the remote today, it was hard to get the turns needed to get the car to beep , then i put the steering lock on  as i got out of the car.

the red key was used by the last owner a lot so i am going down the wear and tear route.

the door locks and ignition are different keys(car was broken in to in the past ) if i get a rebuild kit can i do the door locks as well?

do i have to go to ford to get the lock rebuild kit?

Gaz. the door locks can be rebuilt in similar fashion. Details are HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/doorlockbld.htm). As far as I know the lock rebuild kits are a Ford part. It may look a bit daunting BUT if I can do it anyone can!!. ;D.  The door locks are a bit more time consuming because of the need to remove the trim etc to get access.

It might be worth removing the barrel now when you can still do so and just start it with the ignition switch?

never ever treat the ignition with wd40 or any other oil! only with graphite powder. all oils eventually dry out and together with the graphite powder that originally was in the ignition barrel turn first into a mud-like mass and then dry to stone and when that happens you're totally screwed and can just bin the barrel!
don't believe me? drop by to any locksmith/keycutter and they'll tell you stories that will scare the hell out of you and most of them will show u bins filled with ignition barrels damaged by oils and wd40 especially...

I think his barrel was past it anyway, and it did the trick releasing it
Plus its about to be replaced so I wouldnt worry ;)

even if the barrel is gone anyway if he plans to rebuild it, it will be much more time-absorbing now that it needs cleaning the wd40 out... and it has to be cleaned good so it doesn't screw the barrel after rebuild...

Gaz. [] . Andrew is absolutely right. Once you've got the key to position 1 you need to get the switch OUT. It may be your only chance without brute force.

ok , is there a how too remove the barrel on here?

wd40 was a means to an end it worked and i am happy, the barrel  was cleaned with contact cleaner after i had it going, as for graphite power there is non, thus why it jammed

The  barrel comes out with the top of the cover off and with the keyt in position 1 there is a small pin that needs depressing and then it just pulls out and leaves a hole ....see IGNITION LOCK (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/ignitionlock.htm)

Hi Gaz,

remove the plastic cowling around the ignition barrel then you will see a small hole directly above the barrel there is a spring loaded pin that keeps it in place, you need to turn the key to position 1 then push the pin down with a small nail or pen or similar.
then the barrel should just pull out.

yey

build the new lock i took all of 5 mins following the guide.

However if any of the mods read this please please can a foot note be added to the instructions , i struggled for a good 15-20 mins to get the new lock in
in the end i found the little retaining pin you press down to to remove the barrel was not falling in to it's hole

to correct this you need to insert the key to position one and then slide your fingers down the key and gentle jam them between the key and barrel check the pin will go fully down and insert .

once i did this piece of cake the barrel slipped straight in and works

also after playing with the old lock you can remove both circlips slide the inner barrel out remove the locking pin and re build the lock then the key will turn no problems , you  just need the key coded to your car, saving  the £13

thanks again for all your help
