suddenly tonight mode switch wont change, do i just prize it out? to look behind or is it more complicated

You can pop it out but sometimes the front comes off.
If you open the little coin box below it and unscrew the two phillips screws in the roof of it you can pull the trim out far enough to pop the mode switch out from the back
