Title: Bad loom... no: Coilpack blown!
Post by Cosray on May 3rd, 2009, 3:56pm
Hi all,

April was not a good Scorpio month for me: I left my keys in the locked boot. Snoopy helped me out with some very helpful advice... however before I even got to that -- a Landrover drove into my rear while parked, thus crashing my bumper and taillights and... opening my boot for me..!  :(

Then, 2 days before going on a holiday-drive to France and Spain the engine suddenly ran on 4 cylinders... our local RAC/ANWB was quick to point out that it was a bad loom, "it always is". Eehh, the EDIS or coilpack maybe? "No - they never ever fail".   ::)

While inspecting blue smoke escaped from somewhere between the banks, Fuse 13 blew and that was proof, the man said.

Since it was pouring and I had had loom-troubles before I folded and had the car moved to the local FMD who, without even properly  looking, one day later confirmed this "bad loom-diagnosis". "Can't do anything for you, no stocks of looms anymore/anywhere nor in Cologne, we don't even know the partnumber etc." i.e. please go away.

I booked us a plane instead and had some spare time to look under the bonnet with my mate and myself... and found a blown coilpack . One of 3 coils gone i.e. 2 cylinders missing.

We took off the inlet manifold + throttlehousing anyway to confirm "this bad loom" -- only to find it in excellent condition. So, once back, I will get me a new €175 or better: a used coilpack and we'll put it all back again.

Just as well it didn't happen in Spain...  :D

Meanwhile, beware of specialists: "trust but verify."  ;D

Ray.
Is the EDIS not inside the offside wing behind the headlight ?

Hi all -- it's me causing the confusion:

it's not the EDIS module blown but the coilpack blown, which sits on the front of the engine's RH bank...

Indeed, the EDIS module sits on the rightwing side and connects to the coilpack + capacitor.

I have corrected my topic subject accordingly, though previous responses will carry the wrong topicline.

Sorry for any inconvenience and uncertainties caused,
Ray

Ray.
The old saying goes'the man who never made a mistake never made anything',that's why I don't shout too loud at the lads when they damage a car on the odd occasion, done it m'self more than once  ;)
