Hi guys, after a wee spell of reliability my Scorpio TD is having a bit of a strop again ::) I'm having issues with the ignition switch, the dash lights come on but it's not always turning over the starter motor. I want to check if the ignition switch is at fault so I need to know what two wires on the ignition switch I would need to bridge to simulate turning the key (hot wiring I think is the technical term ;)) Obviously this is not the sort of info that's best put on a public forum so I'd appreciate a PM to let me know which wires do what.

It sounds more like a worn ignition barrel or key.... or the starter motor is dying...

Time for a rebuild kit :) scorps are known for the ignition lock collapsing somewhere inconvenient (mine died in a supermarket car park)

bought one today - £15.02 including VAT - and the instructions for building the lock are on this site somewhere :)

Isnt it the switch thats giving the bother rather than the barrel or am I reading it wrong?

Have you removed the ignition switch from the end of the barrel and tried it that way Jim?

Yep Highlander, it's the ignition switch and not the barrel that's potentially giving me the problems. I had problems last week with it doing exactly the same thing. I checked fuses, relays etc and all seemed fine. Running a wire from the big positive feed on the starter to the small solenoid connection proved that the starter motor was functioning okay. I then fitted an ignition switch I'd kept from the spares car and it fired up perfectly and has been fine for the last week. I just want to "hot wire" the terminals at the ignition switch to see if the problem is a second faulty switch or deeper in the electrical system. I don't want to risk just experimenting with touching wires in case I do damage, hence why I'd like to know which wires on the ignition switch are connected together to simulate turning the key. I'd obviously have the key in the ignition with and turned to the position where the lights come on so that the immobiliser circuit is disabled. My theory is if it starts, I know it's another fault with the ignition switch & if it doesn't, the fault lies else where.

The mystery deepens! I had a play with the test light and discovered that the ignition switch (& the old one I replaced!) is operating as it should. Then the d**n car started again!!!!! The only thing I've noticed is that sometimes there's a slight pause between turning the key to the starting position and the starter motor whirring into life. Any suggestions where I should look next?

Faulty ignition relay?

its number 21 in the battery side fusebox, relay 18 for the heated screen is identical, swap them over

Thanks Highlander, gonna check all the fusebox connections & engine earths tomorrow. I swapped the relays over last time but it made no difference. I know it's nothing to do with the immobiliser circuit either as it started on a tow the last time as well. Will let you know what I find!
