Title: Bad idle
Post by pools on May 19th, 2009, 3:26pm
Hi there!

I found this on the site. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cleanmaf.htm  I have the same symptoms, bad idling when cold, high revs when hot. And the transmition wont change gear from third to fourth. (aut.) But, I have the 12V engine. What to do then? Can somebody help me?

Hello. You could clean your MAF with some carb cleaner, but i think i would start by looking at the transmisson fluid first, see if it's a pinkish reddish colour and not a brown colour and smells like burnt chip fat.....

Ah, sorry!

I've checked it, measured with a ohmmeter. It seems to be good.

Hi
Have you cleaned the idle control valve yet

There is a detailed diagram Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/12vlooms.htm) which may also help. Sometimes taking the large connector apart and cleaning it with contact cleaner will improve the connections.

YOU DO NOT HAVE A MAF ON THE 12V

The symptoms you describe are from my experience synonymous with a faulty IACV .
ie. bad idle when cold and high tickover revs when at running temperature.
Make sure all the vacuum pipes are connected and NOT leaking especially the one under the IACV .
The 4th gear  on the 12v is controlled by vacuum from the pipe under the IACV http://www.drich2422.ukfsn.org/Vacum_pipe.JPG
if that is NOT connected or leaking then you will not get 4th gear engaging.

No, I've now tried that. But no leek in this or any other
vacuum hose. If I take it apart, the engine runs a little bit
better, but not good. Also tried other hoses, but no
change. The IACV is also checked.

Any other ideas?

You may need to clean the IACV a couple of times - work the piston back & forth to force the cleaner through the hollow spindle into its chamber.

Done that. If I disconnect the IACV the engine dies. I can keep
the engine running if I give more gas, but it runs very bad.
