i tried to program a key today i went through the proccess when inserted the new key the pats light started instead of a sold light to confirm sucsessful programing what could be up with the pats light flashing

have you used the master key to program the new one? as far as i remember there also is a limit of 5 or 10 new keys that can be programmed using the master key. so if someone was using the master key earlier as his main key for the car you've got 101% chance that he had exceeded the limit of bringing up the programming mode not even knowing about it...

okay what can i do now to get a spare key

get your local locksmith/key-cutter to copy the chip from you're old key to the new one...
that's the easiest and the cheapest way... other then that you'll have to go to the FMD to plug in a computer and 'force' the PATS to accept a new key...
