Title: Wobbly steering [solved]
Post by Tekno on May 31st, 2009, 10:30pm
I noticed that after changing these:
- Front stabilizer bushes (the replacement of the rubber-> Urethane)
- Front discs + pads (TRW and some cheap pads)
- Stabilizer link rods (vertical bars)
- right track rod end (changed left side couple of weeks ago)

Steering has now light wobble after 80km/h and tyre noise rose clearly.

Before changing those parts there was no problem.

Maybe tire noise rose because of urethane bushes?

Wheel vibration now could be due to angles incorrectly configured (but they probably was already misconfigured as even steering wheel was 40 degrees or so wrong angle.

Bad discs, pads or wrongly installed ?

And one thing, pad wear indicator. I could not find any wires for them. Should there be wired installed originally ?
I bought pads with indicator wires...

Any ideas ?

Some Scorpios have pad wear indicators, but alot don't. There should be a connection plug near the brakes if it has wear indicators, but if you can't find one, then it's most likely not got them  :)

I don't think replacing bushes will increase tyre noise. Wheel wobble & extra tyre noise at 80 km/h sounds as though a wheel is out of balance or tyre is unevenly worn....could even be a bent wheel rim.

What tyres do you have ?....budget tyres are usually noisy & get noisier the more worn they get  ::)

Hope this helps  :)

did yoy get your wheels aligned after you did the track rod ends.they only have to be slighty out to cause lots of agro.

steering wheel out by 40 degrees out? was the car ever hit at at time.seems an awful lot.

as jonny says could be wheel balance of the new tyres.(maybe a balance weight has fallen off the rim)it could be a build up of all these things together.

i know that these cars do not like to have their wheels lifted of the ground and it takes a few miles for them to snuggle back down into their comfortable position again.so maybe the bushes havent settled.

hope you get it sorted soon and am sure some of the gurus will have other options to try

I think problem isnt in tyres or wheels. Problem didnt exist before I changed parts. Tyres were quiet and no any wobbly even in 140+ km/h  8)

Next thing I'll do is to change air filter, brake fluid, rear discs+pads, get it through MOT and wheel alignment.

Have a read of This page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/wishbone.htm). The important part is in red at the end re the weight being on the car if you've replaced any of thses parts. ;)

Wobbly steering solved.

I changed front tyres to rear and vice versa. Front pair wasn't balanced at all! Vibration didnt go to the steering wheel before I changed worn rod ends, bushes etc :D
