Title: Sometimes it Smokes
Post by Chrisb on Jun 5th, 2009, 8:23pm
Hi All,

My 1997 2.5 TDi is a closet smoker. It can go for weeks without a whisp and then it will smoke quite heavily on acceleration for a few minutes then go clean again.

Sometimes I get the feeling that it does it when the car has been parked pointing downhill but I've not been able to confirm this.

I don't think it's the turbo seals as the pressure ducting is clean and dry inside.

Don't think it's general engine wear as it doesn't smoke on startup or during general running and the engine oil is always clean (for a diesel) and not sludged up.

However it has done 155,000 miles and I'm beginning to suspect worn or aged valve stem oil seals as I had a similar problem on a petrol car a few years ago and a top overhaul sorted the problem out.

Now the question.

Does anyone know how I can find out about top overhauls on the 2.5 VM diesel?

The site docs don't seem to cover it and I obviously don't want to dive in without any knowledge.

Isn't that what diseasals normally do, spew out a bit of soot every now & then ?  ;)

What about trying a fuel/injector cleaner (Wynns, STP etc) to see if it gets any better ?  :)

and maybe a change of fuel filter will help

Fuel Filter is nearly new and it gets injector cleaner every year for a Christmas present.

I do get the feeling that the smoke is burnt oil rather than unburnt fuel as it is rather darker than what you get if you try to start it before the curly light goes out.

Chris.
Surely burning oil is blue and over injection is black  ;)
