Title: Autobox fluid check Post by Tekno on Jun 10th, 2009, 7:14am Hello What is correct method for checking fluid amount ? For old Granana mk3 (with A4LD) it was to run engine, and then go 3 times through every lever positions (P-D-N-R-3-2-1...) and then check oil level from dipstick. It showed more oil compared to just running engine & checking dipstick. Same thing with my -98 2.3 + A4LDE.. shows more oil when checked with "A4LD method". Which is really correct? o_O And after changing sump and filter. (3-4 liters of oil came out which I replaced with correct ATF) Yesterday I noticed its slipping little ('kicks') when up shifting to 4rd. Also it doesn't like to kickdown in low speeds to 1. |

Title: Re: Autobox fluid check Post by Tompion on Jun 10th, 2009, 9:22am Have you cleaned the MAF – that can have a big effect. With regard kickdown make sure the floormat hasn’t got under the throttle pedal. Loom damage on the 2.3 can cause problems with changes. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/dohcloom.htm |

Title: Re: Autobox fluid check Post by Tekno on Jun 13th, 2009, 4:24pm I runned engine to normal temperature, then checked fluid level. It's little above "max ". Can that be cause to strange behaviour? What shall I do ? |

Title: Re: Autobox fluid check Post by Snoopy on Jun 13th, 2009, 4:27pm When you say a little above MAX how much above .. but in all honesty it should NOT affect the gears .. LOW fluid can .. |

don't agree Snoopy... above maximum is as bad for the gearbox as below the minimum... and can in my opinion and experience affect the gear change... |

Title: Re: Autobox fluid check Post by Snoopy on Jun 14th, 2009, 7:53am Wojtekjor I did NOT say it wasn't bad for the box , What I said was it should not affect the changes of the box the same as LOW fluid does. It is bad for the box I agree it can cause blown seals etc. Quote:
Doesn't sound as if its overfull it should be on the bit with the xxxxx's on it when HOT as shown http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/handbook102.gif |

Title: Re: Autobox fluid check Post by Tekno on Jun 24th, 2009, 7:16pm Now, should I remove fluid until I get it to -LOW- mark when it's running as cold ? And then check and top it up to -MAX- after driving car to hot? I just bought pump ... |

Title: Re: Autobox fluid check Post by Tekno on Jul 1st, 2009, 11:39am Banging my head against wall ::) Maybe I have to detach transmission oil sump a little bit, just get some of oil out. How much is Min-Max in liters? |

Title: Re: Autobox fluid check Post by Snoopy on Jul 1st, 2009, 6:42pm If you put a thin tube down the filler/dipstick hole you should be suck some more out with a pump .. Otherwise disconnect it at the oil cooler and run the engine to get some more out . |

Title: Re: Autobox fluid check Post by Tekno on Jul 1st, 2009, 8:35pm Yea, I did put thin tube down the dipstick hole but pump just didn't want to get anything out of it (after first success). Maybe oil is too thin for my cheap pump.. It goes back before it ever comes up in the hose. Is there easily detachable connector for oil cooler pipe ? Do you mean connection at front of car or at the transmission? |

Title: Re: Autobox fluid check Post by Tompion on Jul 1st, 2009, 8:47pm If you’re putting a tube down the dipstick hole, measure it against the dipstick – to make sure it goes in far enough as it can snag where the dipstick tube joins the box. My cheap pump will only draw when the oil is hot/thin. |

Title: Re: Autobox fluid check Post by gozz on Jul 1st, 2009, 10:17pm Tekno. If you use the tube method, put a grommet over the tube, shove the tube down as far as it will go,then jam the grommet into the filler tube thus creating a partial vacuum in the filler tube.Obviously the pump must be of the positive displacement type,I use an old SU petrol pump. GOZZ. |

Title: Re: Autobox fluid check Post by Tekno on Jul 3rd, 2009, 3:26pm phew, finally got hose detached :) There came out 2-3 litres out BLACKISH fluid. I then poured half litres new RED fluid in :) edit: holy cow, it works much smoother now :) |
