Title: Master Keys Post by josswallace on Jun 10th, 2009, 4:52pm I have just got a 1998 Ultima estate which has two black keys with red corners. I don’t know whether these come from a Red Master plus two black keys or the later system. When I git my last Ultima I had exactly the same problem and found a locksmith to come and he cut and programmed a new Red Master for me. Unfortunately I can’t find his details. Is there any way of telling which system of keys I have and does anyone have a locksmith contact in the North London area. Any help would be appreciated. My P Reg Ultima Saloon is still available if any one is interested. Ian Wallace |

Title: Re: Master Keys Post by josswallace on Jun 11th, 2009, 5:24pm In response to a suggestion from the list I took one of my two keys for the Ultima to my local lock smith and asked if it was possible to have another key cut. He took the key and put it in a machine and came back and quoted me £56 to have another key cut with a chip in it that would both open the car and start it and he also said I could have a key cut without a chip in it that would open the car but not start it. He refused to sell me a key with a chip in it but not programmed. Does the fact that he can cut another key from one of mine throw any light on what system I have, and has anyone any ideas on where I could go to get an unprogrammed key………I am in North London. |

Title: Re: Master Keys Post by wojtekor on Jun 11th, 2009, 6:11pm get a key from ebay, tape the chip from your existing key to the pats ring that's around the ignition, cut a key for a few £ without programming it and you'll be able to start the car and open/close it without a problem... |

Title: Re: Master Keys Post by wojtekor on Jun 11th, 2009, 6:15pm NOTE: you'll have to remove chips from all other keys in order to start the car, so the unprogrammed chip doesn't interfere with the one glued to the pats ring. |

Title: Re: Master Keys Post by Snoopy on Jun 11th, 2009, 7:44pm I got some unchipped keys cut so that in any event I could always open the car and as long as I had one of the original keys on the key ring it all worked OK . |

Title: Re: Master Keys Post by wojtekor on Jun 11th, 2009, 7:56pm Snoopy, like you said, these are unchipped keys... if you you try a chipped but unprogrammed key it will interfere with the programmed chip and it won't start... at least it was like that in my case... anyway it's easy to fool pats and get the car going without programming a new key... |
