Title: CD Multichanger has no power
Post by Technology2005 on Jun 26th, 2009, 9:08pm
I have a 2060 6 disc multichanger with 2007 head unit fitted to my 1995 2.0L Ultima. When I bought the car the previous owner said it worked intermittently (which was correct) It used to work for a few days then it would be "dead" (unable to eject the caddy, not found by the head unit)

Recently it seems to be dead all the time. I've checked the handbook but cannot find a fuse for the changer, plus with the symptoms I'm suspecting the wiring or the unit itself. I removed the multiplug from the unit and inspected it and the cable that I could see and all seems to be in order.

Is there a troubleshooting guide for this unit or anyone got any ideas what to check next? If I had a spare unit I'd just swap it over to prove or disprove a faulty changer unit!

hi there

have a look at the wiring to the cd unit.

iirc, there's a dodgy earth loop wire that needs to be looked at.

you'll see what i mean when you find it. it's near the multi plug.

Andrew is correct. The 'fault' he refers to is listed in the Fault Finder section Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/faultfinds.htm). You may need to unwrap some of the outer wrapping to locate the point at which the earth wire joins. Also another area to check is the loom by the offside boot hinge which, if not kept securely clipped back, can get 'hit' by the hinge which will eventually fracture the cables inside. I think, however, that the CD unit gets it power in a separate loom.  ;)

Thanks for the help! I'll spend some more time in the boot today then! I hadn't peeled back the insulation on the cable as it looks original and undamaged sat there behind the changer brackets. Here's to hoping that's what it is....

I'll report back later :)

Well the earth is good, have inspected it and checked with a multimeter and it's definitely grounded ok at the join and at the multiplug.

Have removed the changer and taken the covers off and can see no obvious problems on the circuit boards, no burnt looking components, no corrosion or anything. Also no sign of any fuses to replace.

I still think the problem is going to be wiring. Should the loom get power to the multiconnecter even if the head unit won't activate it...I mean, what should I be looking at next in terms of power at the connector?

hi  there

there might be a fuse on the back of the head uniit or the changer wiring at the head unit, iirc.

Better dig out my DIN removal tools then  ;D

It's all good fun this auto electrical stuff..

Think I'll stick to laptops in future, at least I can get them on the workbench under a magnifying scope lol

I'll report back this afternoon, thanks for the suggestions :)
