Title: Scorpio slow
Post by Del on Jun 29th, 2009, 9:02pm
MOT passed today which is great  :)
Was sat for 6 years so i'll account for that.
Now it's a 2.0 P plate ultima, changed battery topped up water and it runs perfectly, but god is it slow I mean it gets going if you thrash it but, had foot to floor and it was litterally hardly getting any faster, pulls off fine.
Now gearbox oil (auto) needs filling I know that could this be a cause.

Check the pipes from the autobox to the cooler - they have metal to rubber joints which corrode and leak which could explain where your fluid has gone  ???

There is fluid in there, it just doesn't pull of in drive sometimes when cold?

But any ideas to why it was so slow as I did have my foot hard down and it crept from 30 to 35, when I really thrashed the nads off it I got to 70, but before that it was so slow.

Changes up fine, is there any special way to clean the MAF (is this the one that joins onto the air filter).

Not really, they have a pretty good diff gearing the old 2.0 16v's ;)

I still reckon they are quicker than a 24v off the mark

There was a similar thread recently about a slow 2.0
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Advice;action=display;num=1242658156

Changing the crumbling top loom on mine has helped as it was all bare wires, but the last thread also mentioned checking if the catalytic convertor is blocked. I've not checked mine yet but it's worth a thought.

When did you last replace the plugs ?.....old & worn plugs can severly affect acceleration  :)

It was never a slow car, and I find the 2.0 a pretty quick car (well it was) need to remember though 6 years it's been standing.

Shouldnt make much difference if its passed an MOT, all the brakes and things must be free and working.

Has it had those plugs in for 6 years?? :)

Re the blocked/broken cat theory, what i do to check that is to slacken off or disconnect the exhaust at the manifold so the exhaust gasses can escape then try it, (noisy though) ;)

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but that's 17575 miles & 6+ years since the last service, so that means it's 7575 miles overdue for a service. If the plugs weren't replaced at the last service, then who knows how long they've been in there & how many miles they've done  ;)

Have you removed the plugs to check their condition ?  :)

Will change the plugs, they look pretty clean mind you but will do with an oil & filter change.

mine was aswell slow, felt like it were towing a caravan. changed plugs and re-adjusted acceleration cable and what a difference!!!!!!! i was suprised that 2.0  could pull that way, and knowing that scorpio is not a small car!
