Title: My first Scorpio problem.....
Post by Robzere31 on Jul 20th, 2009, 8:45pm
Hi all,

Had the car just over a week now & the first problem has surfaced !!
Stopped at a shop on the way home from work tonight, came back 5 mins later & car would not start.
Turning over fine but wouldn't fire.

Got a tow from a friend who lives nearby & on a tow it fired up & ran fine.
Drove it home & switched it off. Tried to start it again & nothing.
Turning over fine but will only start on a tow/bump.

Any idea's??

It's a 1998 2.5 diesel & I've checked the obvious like fuel filter/pipes etc & there fine.

Don't think the diesel has one.
If it did, wouldn't it still not start when bieng towed?

Going to drop it into the garage in the morning, if I can get it going before work.

As soon as you said DIESEL the THREE things that spring to mind is the air lock that happens along with water in line and compression and like you say bump start and then runs so got to be one of these

Could be a fuel problem  :-/.......When it won't start, have you tried pressing the primer pump to see if it draws the fuel up & gets rid of any air ?....A friend recently had a similar issue & it was a faulty primer pump  :)

Update:

Left it last night as it was getting late.
Came to it this morning & it started, drove to work aprox 24 miles, ran fine.
Got to work, switched off & tried to re-start.....wouldn't start although it turned over fine.

Left it about 1 1/2 hours  & tried it again & it's started.

Must be a fuel related issue, but what I've no idea.

Has it got a priming button on a fuel filter under the bonnet , if it has the diaphram has gone. Now it may not have one but I had the same with a mondeo and that was the problem.

Yep it has, I've had another friend of mine say the same thing.
Going to let the garage have a look.

Thanks for the ideas.

It's booked into the garage on Monday.

It seems to start fine if it's been parked for a couple of hours,
but if I drive it for a few miles then switch off & try to restart it doesn't fire.
Leave it a hour & it's fine.  :-/

I'm thinking it's a lift pump issue (Diaphragm), or other fuel related problem,
as I've noticed at traffic lights when I pull away the revs seem reluctant to pick up until I'm at 1,500+ RPM

What about the fuel filler cap?

Not sure if they are meant to have a vent on the Scorpio or not. If there was a problem, then you would feel a vacuum when opening the cap after the car has been switched off.

Good idea but I tried it when the problem first occured. No vacuum felt when cap removed.

Someone else probably has a definitive answer but I'm 99.9% sure the tank is supposed to run with a vacuum - I always hear it being released when I fill with petrol.

petrol engines run with vacuum.  diesols don't

Had the word back from the garage...... low compression  :(
Says it's not worth re-building engine as it has 195K on it.

Going to keep an eye out for a good second hand engine.
Not much about ATM though.

Still runs fine, just starting is a pain.
If another one comes along, I may just swap the car as I like the feel of the Scorpio.
I'd grab a Cossie if I didn't have to do 300 mile a week to work.  ;D

Hi all,

Sorry for the lack of an update recently.
All sorted now, car is back up & running hopefully with no more problems.  ;)

After another look at the engine, & a change of garage, (to one that knew what they are talking about)
we decided that low compression was not the problem.

A new injector pump & a few tweaks later she is running again.
The big test will be tomorrow when I drive to work.

Well, the drive to work was sucsessful  ;D

The difference is amazing, the car now pulls really well right from 800rpm, & starting is instant.

Just shows, never just take the word of one garage,
apparantly there's nothing wrong with the engine dispite the 195K on the clock.
