Hi

Had my cosworth in for an MOT today - I knew it needed a new steering rack as it had been losing fluid and a dipped beam headlight bulb but the rest was a bit depressing......

Steering rack

Rear suspension needs replacing as bushes are worn - I'm guessing this is the expensive bit......it's the estate.

Front bushes of some description - steering related I think not suspension - I missed this bit due to biting my keyboard....

Have been quoted £700

Is this reasonable?

If it's in the ball park then I think I'll go for it - the car body is scruffy but pretty rust free and nothings dropped off the engine yet. Oh and the heater matrix still works :-o

If it's way over the odds what is the hassle factor doing the shock absorbers myself? I'm not a mechanic but I have a friend who's pretty useful with a spanner - will I lose a friend if I twist his arm into trying it???

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu gosh really :-o

I wonder what they've quoted for then? The steering rack I think they said was in the region of £200 so they can't be fitting new shocks at cost price - no one likes me that much!!!!

Can you just replace the bushes? sorry to be such a noob

If so is that doable by an average joe with a spanner?

I'm guessing some sort of spring compressor is needed - any particular type and warnings? I'd rather not send a spring into orbit at the weekend......

The bushes aren't available separately, but given the fact that a shock absorber bush is not too complex to manufacture, has anyone asked of the possibility to custom order a set? There's a lot of factories around that create all sorts of tuning bushes, they can't have large volumes, can they?

Hmmmmmm does this mean the garage has screwed up and quoted me for saloon shocks not the estate version :-(((((

Are you sure it is the bushes in the shocks ?
There are quite a few other bushes on the rear suspension which can need replacement.
Polyurathane bushes are cheaper than OE replacement I've found.
If it is the shocks then used ones may be the answer.
Recon steering rack about £100, not too difficult to change.

Be sure to support the car well on axle stands etc... if you and your mate decide to tackle any repairs - the Scorpio is a pretty heavy car.

Just a thought there's an estate for sale here http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=cars;action=display;num=1250347478 maybe if you need an estate it would be cheaper to buy this and maybe sell yours to an enthusiast who can rebuild it..... And no i'm not on commision... ;D

Are you sure it's the dampers? You only said "Rear suspension" in your post.
There are other bushes.

Could be wishbones at the front pushing up the price?

Think you need to have another chat & find out what is required.

Found out today that the garage had quoted for saloon shocks - the revised price would be much higher :-(

Scorpio Mike - I'm pretty sure it's the bushes but will check - Have spoken to a mechanic today that said he used to maintain Scorpio funeral cars and that they used to use bushes from Sierra or Transit shocks as replacements. Anyone heard of this approach?

tonyboy - Thanks for the suggestion if all else fails I'll look into it. Would rather keep the one I have if possible.

If it is the suspension unit that needs replacing as a whole unit, does anyone know of a good breakers around Bristol that would be worth contacting?

Just a thought but has anyone tried modding some poly bushes for the estate rear shocks ?

I'm sure they could be trimmed down on a lathe to fit.
If I had a lathe I'd give it a go myself.

Funeral vehicles are saloon based as against estate,and are nearly all fitted with self levelling pneumatic rear suspension.

Yes they look completely different. The estate shocks are mounted inside the coil springs, while the saloon has them mounted outside to the edge of the arm. So far no-one has come up with an alternative standard (i.e. non-levelling) estate shock that would fit.

If it were a saloon with self-levelling, self levelling pneumatic shocks can be replaced with standards (Granada mk3 saloon compatible e.g.) ONLY IF the coil springs are replaced with heavy duty springs (got the T-shirts).

Looks like I'll have to try and find a pair in a scrap yard or kiss goodbye to the car. It seems hard to justify the expense of new units :-(

I sent another chap on here a pair of used estate rear shocks for £50,there is another estate here that I am robbing,if you are interested I could get em off and see if they are useable,the car was MOT'd when brought in,but was an electrical nightmare !! The shocks are of no use to me because,as previously stated all my funeral vehicles are saloon based.

currently breaking 24v estate in cornwall and i make regular runs in my artic to cheltenham. will check out shocks if you are interested. Darren

Well you could be worse off, if you're not from UK nor Germany you have to get almost all used parts from abroad. For me, however, if it's a small item, the postage is usually less from UK to Finland than within Finland.

got them off today after work. they both ok, no leaks. be passing by bristol next week. let me know if you want them or they go in the dark attic!!!!!
