I now have a pair of used shocks on the way from Gozz.

I've found this pdf which make it look oh so simple

But the fist note raises a question.

"NOTE: When self-levelling suspension is
fitted, detach the connector from the shock
absorber."

What type of connection is it?

Holy cow that looks like a lot of work

I've searched the message board for advice on fitting them but nothing turned up. Can someone point me in the right direction please.

I'm no mechanic so if someone could let me know ant potential pitfalls that would be much appreciated. I have a mechanically minded friend but I'm kinda leaping in the dark here :-(

Tim.
The connection refers to the airline fitted on some saloons with pneumatic self levelling.Estates have self contained levelling within the special shocker and have one nut on the top and two bolts on the bottom,no other fittings.You need to consult Highlander about changing them as he has much experience,you may need to remove the entire trailing arm.

I do them the dodgy way :)

cant find the estate rear axle assembly picute now, has it been moved/deleted??

heres the saloon, different but we can use it

two different versions, i'm guessing yours being a P reg may be the newer one with the twin mounting bushes on the diff backplate but the principle is the same

What i do is remove the rear shock top and bottom nuts/bolts

remove the two screws/clamps holding the stabiliser bar ( 8 ) to the chassis (theyre not shown on the diagram but you'll see them easily enough)

then unscrew bolt 23 which is behind the diff, its not too clear on this diagram where it is but it goes through the hole at the back of the subframe between the two bushes (7)

then undo bolts (16) one each side and (17) two each side, this will release the subframe.

Then what i do is jack the car body up slowly, keeping a VERY careful eye on the rear brake flexi hoses, dont jack it so far that it stretches them.

The springs and shocks will fall out now :)

Gozz - Thanks for the info.

Highlander - Thank you for the step by step details. One thing I'm not sure about is the jacking business. Do I take it I undo all the bolts with the wheel in place and the car on the ground and then jack the car up to get the springs out? If so how easy is it to reach the stabiliser bar clamps?

Just out of interest how long roughly do you think it will take to do the job?

I dont like undoing things they break or never go back together! I replaced my shocker 98 td estate (there is no pipe) as indicated in the manuals the estate is different to the saloon. Just jacked up the car put on axle stands, removed wheel used jack to support wheel hub undid shock absorber bolts 1 top 2 lower, seperated arm to stabiliser bar and lowered the hub. It nearly all came out. Spring needed a little compressing, so made some small spring compressors and hey presto spring and shocker were released. Just did revese to refit.
