Right now i'm wondering right it's fine in all gears, 1,2,R,P it's even fine in D but it's just when it's cold it has a delay to go into gear. Is this a whole gearbox or something else? If say you leave it for 5 mins to warm up it will engage D fine and plod along happily all day.

oil and filter change first i'd reckon, sounds like once the oil warms up and gets a bit thinner its working fine

Thats good. What oil does it take? and is it a big job? will tackle most things on cars  :)

hi del

in your case, i'd change the oil twice.

once the new oil goes in, it will mix with the old oil in the torque converter and dislodge any sludge that is there, maybe making your issue go away to start with, but return worse.

just drain the oil again after a few hundred miles.

I'd use Comma AQ202 for Scorpio's automatic gearbox. They recommend it for Scorpio as it has mc202 specification

What i do with mine s to drill a 8mm hole in the lowest part of the gearbox sump to drain the oil out .Then remove the sump and weld a 13mm nut around the hole then use a 13mm bolt and a copper washer as a drain plug .

Then change the filter and refit the sump  ;)

What a good idea! Do you pump out something at all first, I'd imagine it floods a bit around the drill? And how much did you get out using that method?

I would assume a drain plug kit would do equally well, to make a thread in the hole in the sump.

draining sump only there comes out 2-3 litres of oil.

The first time with the drill  is a bit messy but the next time is easy just undo the bolt and let it drain into an oil drainer .

Hi Del,

Did you sort out your gearbox? The reason I ask is that I have the same problem except the only gear affected is reverse. On a cold day select and wait. Usually it's a second or two but the other day it was a bit longer. Only ever at start up and the gearbox is faultless apart from that. All changes up and down are smooth.

Next question is.....where did you get the filter from and how much?   I am struggling to find one online.

Creating my own sump-plug sounds perfect except I have no time, ramp or welding equipment and I am just wondering what my garage will say when I suggest it!

Have you checked your transmission fluid level ? Low fluid can cause delay in engaging gear.

Thanks for the link.

I do have a solenoid problem in the gearbox. I very rarely, and I mean rarely, get the juddery drive problem. A search on this site told me that it is caused by a faulty solenoid that happens to be on the same wiring as 2 of the injectors. Hence the 2 cylinder attempt to move. Only ever happens on cold days and only on first start up. Turnoff and then turn on again instantly cures it. I hadn't associated the two problems. Mmmmmmm

Crash, mines the same & has been for the last 3 winters (try to select reverse after a very cold night & it takes an age & when it does select, the engine seems to run on 2 cylinders) & like your's, switching off the engine & restarting seems to do the trick.

I didn't know the solenoid was connected to 2 of the injectors though  :-/.......that would explain alot I suppose  :)

And the solenoid is buried in the gearbox, I believe. Out of reach of my wallet!  ;D
