Title: Turbo Diesel Starting problems
Post by Paul_Scorpio on Sep 16th, 2009, 10:27pm
I’ve got a Ford Scorpio Turbo Diesel. I haven’t used it for at least 8 weeks. Obviously, the battery was flat. I jumpstarted it and got it running today. However, all the dials (fuel, revs, temperature, and fuel) weren’t working they flickered and moved about wildly before settling down now and then at zero.

I hoped that by driving the car for an hour with the battery charging the dials would settle down. However, this didn’t happen and once I parked the car, turned the engine off the car wouldn’t start again at all. The immobiliser still works ok (flashes), but when I turned the ignition key I get no response. There are no warning symbols on the dashboard and the engine doesn’t turn over at all. There is a clicking sound and that’s it.

I wonder whether a main fuse has blown, and if so which fuse number would that be?

From the Fordscorpio website diagnosis I thought it might be R17 or R18 or even F31, F34, F37, F42.

Has anyone experienced similar problems? And how did they solve it?

Does anyone know where I can get fuses from? Maybe I can buy replacement fuses from a Ford Main dealer?

I would be grateful if anyone can give me any advice about what I should do to get my car started again.

Thanks

Paul

Paul.
You need to charge the battery from an outside source then test it for condition,it could well be shot. The vehicle charging system will not properly charge a flat battery be it good or bad.

Thanks for the advice Gozz. Once I've charged the battery if the car still won't start could it then be down to a fuse? Alternatively, could it be that I have the wrong battery. My battery from Halfords is rated at 30amps, which seems too small for the size of the car.

Paul,

GOZZ is absolutely right.

Also have a look at this http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/battery.htm half way down there is an element that talks about battery capacity and performance. 30 Amp really does not sound right.

Was that fitted when you bought the car or did you buy it?

Give Halfords a call and ask them to check that the battery they supplied is correct.

Once you can confirm that the battery is not at fault, if you are still having problems you will get lots of advice.

I see that you have been here already. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/faultfinds.htm

Its more likely a duff battery, is it an old one?

Thanks for all the advice. I'll check the battery and let you know how I get on if I need further advice. Cheers, Paul.
