Title: Donking noise
Post by Waglet on Sep 19th, 2009, 9:44am
Seems trivial but hey someone might have a clue... ;D Every now and then, and it can be when I go over a speed hump or round a roundabout, I get this donking noise from the rear. Defo sounds like something banging on something else. The tank has been out a few times this year searching for that elusive non-starting problem but that is secure and tight. I've been underneath checking, shaking and poking etc. but nothing is loose. Its odd that one day it donks and the next it does not even on the same journey. Any ideas? Cheers

Have you checked for anything loose and moving about in the spare wheel well ?

I had the same sort of thing in my old MK III for a couple of weeks and it was a socket extension bar rolling around.

Don't know if this will help but few weeks ago i had to use my spare wheel (punture) and when I had had my new tyre fitted the fitter put my spare back in the well and didn't use the bar to secure it and I had similar noise for days couldn't work out what it was till I checked in the wheel well secured it and noises were gone.

My first thoughts were indeed the spare wheel housing. All secure in there   >:(

If you have a towbar does it have good clearance at its forward end ?

Saloon 24V. I wonder if it could be the exhaust rubber mountings, there seems to be plenty of play when I `wiggle` the exhaust. However this movement by hand fails to produce the donking. (Excuse the in-uendo ;D) How much play/movement should there be?

there should be some, have a look to see if all the rubbers are in place, there are a couple around the fuel tank, one may have been damaged or come off when you had the fuel pump trouble

my girlfriends escort has a donk every now and then and i know that it the exhaust, a new one was fitted and one if the hangers isnt bent right, id fix it but scorpio comes first  ;D

Put on a couple of cable ties to take up a bit of slack on one of the rubbers as a temporary measure. Lets see if that stops it and if so I'll get a new rubber.  ::)

I wonder if the 'donking' noise sounds more if it's in the centre of the car, and it's the prop-shaft, or if it's refering all the way through the car and just happens to be the anti-roll-bar links at the front?   I could get my anti-roll-bar links on the front to 'donk' by waggling the rear of the car from side-to-side!
