Title: Cosworth will not run Post by willpower on Sep 22nd, 2009, 12:17pm My super 24V N reg Cosworth auto estate broke down in France in the middle of August, it has done 88000 miles. The fault was a huge missfire which started on trying to start the car having used it half an hour before with no problem so the engine was warm and it was a hot day. It was diagnosed with a failed coil pack by the local French garage, after we had driven it to them at a max speed of walking pace for about two miles. They could not source the part so the RAC said they would repatriate the car and provide a hire car for us and two Greyhounds and lots of luggage! There is not much room in a two door Corsa which is all they could find as it was a public holiday. The car is now back having been trundling around Europe for the last month. Our local garage has fitted a new coil pack and it has made no difference at all. Compression check is ok. The nearside three cylinders are not firing although out of the engine they are sparking and when removed they are wet. The garage have been able to make it run(just) by removing some air pipes, But are now stumped. I am going into hospital today for about a week but a friend will monitor any help you can give and pass on info to the garage Many many thanks PS I do hope it can be fixed as it is far to good for the chop |

Title: Re: Cosworth will not run Post by Dave2302 on Sep 22nd, 2009, 5:01pm sounds like a wiring loom problem causing the injectors on that bank to stay open. These looms are noted for failing insulation which causes shorts. HTH Dave |

Title: Re: Cosworth will not run Post by Highlander on Sep 22nd, 2009, 9:02pm its not broken a timing chain? I'd suggest your first move is another garage! |

Title: Re: Cosworth will not run Post by Dave2302 on Sep 22nd, 2009, 9:09pm They said compressions were good so I would assume chains are okay Stuart, but yeah another garage sounds like a good move ;D |

Title: Re: Cosworth will not run Post by gozz on Sep 22nd, 2009, 9:24pm willpower. As Dave says the looms are an absolute joke !! the worst part is in the V between the two heads underneath all the inlet gear and in close proximity to the water rail in there. The heat ruins the insulation which causes cross connections and if there should be a water leak as well the situation is exacerbated.Even in the rare eventuality that the outer covering appears intact, the wire insulation is almost always little more than fragments. GOZZ. |

Title: Re: Cosworth will not run Post by willpower on Sep 27th, 2009, 1:43pm Many thanks for all the info , is replacing the wiring loom a diy project and if so does anyone have a part number and a prefered supplier. Is any testing of componants or circuits required prior to or after installation and is there a method of installation on the site somewhere. I am sorry I cannot add any tech knowledge to the site but if anyone has any plumbing queries just ask if it does not contravene any site etiquette. Thanks again |

just doing mine at mo. you have to take a lot of bits off the top of engine just to get loom off. its just a case of stripping back to bare wires and tape up or replace damaged wires. i have found on most that the copper inside the wire is fine, its the insulation thats crap. not difficult to do just time consuming. trevor at fordparts quoted me £535 from germany for new loom!!!! or try for 2nd hand one but they are still pricey. hth darren |

Title: Re: Cosworth will not run Post by willpower on Sep 27th, 2009, 2:10pm Thanks Darren insulation tape method certainly seems favorite. whilst the bits are off the top of the engine is there anything else worth checking? and would it be worth forming a ducting to protect the loom, probably wont know until it is uncovered. Regards Murray |

Title: Re: Cosworth will not run Post by tootman318 on Sep 27th, 2009, 8:03pm just make sure you know where everything goes. theres a lot of pipes and plugs to remember. if in doubt label everything. if engine was running ok, dont worry about anything else. the wiring will be enough for now!!!! |

Title: Re: Cosworth will not run Post by gozz on Sep 27th, 2009, 10:47pm I finished one of my looms off with aluminium tape, the theory being that it would reflect some heat ! GOZZ. |

Title: Re: Cosworth will not run Post by Highlander on Sep 29th, 2009, 10:20am Doesn't insulating tape melt? Would using heatshrink and soldering not the best idea or replacing the wires? Some of our European friends have done it i believe, will have a look |

Title: Re: Cosworth will not run Post by tootman318 on Sep 29th, 2009, 7:34pm insulating tape on original loom stuart so should be ok. hopefully!!!! i agree about soldering and replacement wires but trouble is connectors break, buying replacements plus wire = time. just finished mine. done as goss said, used some heatshield and alu tape. replaced about ten wires all told. looks good. also rerouted loom so easier if theres a next time ??? |

Title: Re: Cosworth will not run Post by willpower on Oct 30th, 2009, 2:05pm Just about to start to strip down stuff to get to suspected defective wiring loom but a thought just crossed my mind. Before we start is there any mileage in checking the exhaust cat on that side of the engine . Would a blocked exhaust give the same symptoms as the duff loom. When we first aquired the car bits of cat came out of the tail pipe, we assumed because it had been standing unused for 3 years. Am I just cluthing at straws! I just thought if exhaust could not escape, air could not come in. As I have said before it has a good spark at the plugs Thanks |
