Title: Hole in sill area of car, will it fail MOT?
Post by mondeoman on Sep 24th, 2009, 12:51pm
Hi,

I've just had my car wax oiled by a company called WaxWorks in Morpeth and he mentioned to me that he has spotted a small hole in the sill area.

He's put plenty of wax oil and tried to clean it all up, but I was wondering it it would be an automatic MOT failure etc?

If so and it will need a bit of welding, how easy is it if he has covered outside and inside the sill with wax oil?

I've just had my scorpio in for MOT, & the fail sheet included the N/S sill.
Any corrosion which results in a hole or loss of strength to the area will be considered a fail.

A new outer sill from Ford is £116.81, pattern one is not available AFAIK.
The inner sill is no longer available from Ford.

I've also been quoted £120 for labour for the fitting as apparently it's a pain to do.

Some say the Granada mk3 inner and outer sills fit as they're the same size.

Can anyone confirm this?

Robzere.
The outer Granada pattern part sills definitely fit,I would think that it should follow that the inners should. You can always cut out the rot and plate and skim them, although the man shouldn't have waxoyled until this was done owing to the flames and smoke emanating therefrom.Whilst not particularly dangerous it makes the job very unpleasant and is a waste of good waxoyl !

Just to confirm reply from python9 :

http://www.elcats.ru/ford/Parts.aspx?Model=84&Group=EBF0000B&AtId=26022
http://www.elcats.ru/ford/Parts.aspx?Model=72&Group=07E00009&AtId=23831

RH sill part number is 7167028
LH sill part number is 7167029

These are Ford part numbers - same part is listed for Granada Mk3 & 'our' Scorpio

Mk3 Granada pattern replacement sill parts should therefore fit the Scorpio.

theres an old mechanics trick, provided the hole is very small - drill it out with a bit and it becomes a mechanicaly produced hole, not a corrosion one - not failable. (VERY location dependant tho)

I wouldnt reccomend this personally tho - i'd either plate it or fit a new skin cill

It's more like a tear than a hole, but it is caused by corrosion.

Will it make things difficult considering I've coated the car in wax oil? Will they have to remove it etc before they can weld?
