having just purchasing my latest estate i was cleaning the engine bay when the alternator started to smoke after changing the unit it started ok but since then it turns over but will not fire up i have also noticed the engine bay wiring loom has gone britle so alot of bear wires i have checked the electrics and there seams to be a very weak intermiten spark from the coil i have a 12v 2.9 estate any suggestions would be most helpful

The 12v has an engine loom given to disintegration,any water getting on to it will go straight in and cause shorting,in addition to this problem there is a three core cable with a copper sheath around it which contains signal wires from the distributor to the PCM,this breaks down and sends false messages thus causing refractory or non starting.You need to patiently strip and remake the loom,insulating every cable and making up a new three core for the distributor.
