Title: 2.9 - 12v wont start
Post by NormanHall on Nov 6th, 2009, 1:46pm
the last two weeks on the odd occasion there was a hesitation to increase the revs when putting into D and pulling away, this was followed by a reluuctance to start one day and needing three attempts. However last night when I went to put it in the garage it cut out when I was moving from P to D and wouldn't start. I left it overnight and still wont start.  So I took advice fro a previous post (GOZZ) and stripped the loom from the inner wing block through to the distributor, and pulled the co-axial type wire to seperate them, did a continuity test of the three wire mentioned and they were OK. So I wrapped the copper wire as best I could back around the three where it was (not very neat) re taped every thing back up and refitted. I also disconnected the battery and though the PCM would go through a check up mode, to cut a long story short, I dont know what Ive done but it started.

May have been a dirty connector somewhere. Taking it off and putting it back on may have cleaned it enough for it work.........

Hi Norman,  :)
My 12valve just would not start and I could not find anything wrong anywhere  :-/.  The engine would spin but no sign of ignition.  But importantly ther was no smell of fuel from the exhaust.  Eventually I removed the Fuel Pressure Regulator, gave the engine a quick spin, plenty of fuel on the petrol Tank side so I gave the Regulator a shake about, replaced it, turned the engine over and up she fired  :D.  Engineers Cringe now  ::)
No more problems for a year  8) but now she needs sorting out properley.

Good luck

Mike  :)

:) Well, once again I removed the fuel line on top of the Fuel Pressure Regulator, cranked the engine, plenty of petrol from the FPR, dried up a bit of spillage and then tried to start her up withot success so I went inside and sulked for a while then returned to the car and cranked her and cranked  her  ::) aaaaannnnndddd she eventually fired up  :-/. so I let her warm up for about 10mins and contemplated things.

Now recently she passed her MOT but the idle figures were only just within bounds, just under the Max Limit and the revs were now oscillating between 1000 - 1300 with ocasional dips to 650rpm - not right. The vertical spindle on the  linkeage on the inlet manifold was sticking so I gave it a bit of oil (this is spindle that I had  had made for me aprox. 4 years ago as the Ford Original was all over the place, but that is another story).  Anyway,  I got her to idle at 760rpm.  Left her overnight to cool down.  She fired up just dandy yesterday afternoon, revs at 750 rising to 1100 as the choke operated,  I have just now started her up and all is as should be with the revs. at a steady 1100 as she warms up.  8).

Now, having had this car for over 4 years one thing I do know is that on start up any applied throttle and she will not fire-up.  So I now think that the throttle sticking open a little, in that the revs would not be allowed to drop to 750ish rpm on switch off, leaves the engine managment system believing that the throttle is being applied the next time I start her up.  This more so during Winter temps when the managment system recognises the lower Temperature and aplies "cold starting proceedures

I think I've gone on long enough for the time-being so I leave my comments and deductions for your contemplation and I look forward to all your responses eagerly  8) as I rely wholy upon your expertize to keep my Scorpios on the road.

Mike  :)

after my last post everything was going well until yesterday when it broke down, just lost power fired on two cylinders for a while then nothing, when I left it a while and turned on the ignition the pointers all flew to the right so I coupled another battery on and hey presto OK. So I invested in a new battery but found out the alternator not charging, so I am awaiting an expensive alternator coming.
