Title: I'm baffled, Cold air into cabin
Post by Les59 on Nov 12th, 2009, 2:51pm
Hi All, 1997/8 face lifted Cosy Ultima, Has anyone ever had a problem with cold air coming in drivers side only, around knee height seems to be around steering column, had fascia and all covers off, had a mate of mine check make sure all ducting on the heater is ok, can’t see if there is grommets missing or damaged on the bulk head etc, ended up stuffing foam everywhere still cold, heater and AC work perfectly, I’m baffled.

Really Cold knees plus.

Les

Hi Les,

I have a 98, nearly the last one, 2.3 Ultima estate and I noticed as soon as I got it that I seemed to be getting a cold blast around the nether regions! Same as you it seemed to be coming from around the bottom of the steering column surround. I never could find out where it was from and to be honest I haven't noticed it for years. If you do find the cause let me know!

Paul

Does it blow the cold air on your knees with the heater blower while stationary or is it while you're moving you feel it?

Do you know if the heater matrix has been replaced in the past ?....reason I ask is because sometimes the person fitting it can forgot or not bother (it's fiddly) to replace the foam seal & metal plate around the matrix pipes where they go through the bulkhead........just a thought  :)

All of the Scorpios I owned had this characteristic and I must admit I did go to some lengths to find out what was causing it on S29COS. I never did find out!!! All the seals were in place and no dodgy heater unit parts..... I would be interested in knowing too! ;D

I'm taking all onboard and will do another thorough check, but I and several people including a couple of Ford mechanics and a Scorpio expert have looked, like some of you found nothing, I had a 95 for 6 years scraped last January engine loom, never had this problem, does seem only to be on the late models, and yes did have the wife groveling around she not happy, got a crick in her back, I also have a crick. not sure about the heater matrix, but for sure someone had the dash out as all but 2 of the screw retainers were totally destroyed or missing, so maybe as the heater works fine unlike my old Scorpio.
Will be in touch Monday
Take care All

I had this with my TD. It turned out that a very large grommet on the passenger side of the bulkhead was missing  ::) For some reason the air was only felt at the drivers side, weird! The grommet was between the heater unit & the battery, well worth checking.

Cheers Jim

definately wasn't that on mine Jim. I checked every grommet and panel but could never find out what the cause was.....

Must confess this problem is a bit of a mystery to me as well. I,ve been all over mine trying to find the source of the draught & TBH im clueless ( nothing new there then ).  ;D ;D ;D

Hi.

Perhaps a strategically placed vertically challenged person with a lighted candle could identify the source?

Just a thought.
