Title: Re: Clunk from back Post by lleewar on Nov 16th, 2009, 7:06pm I seem to have the same problem. Sounds awful. I can also create the clunk when braking. |

Title: Re: Clunk from back Post by tonyboy on Nov 16th, 2009, 7:12pm I'm thinking CV joint, but not sure. Will check at the weekend. If it clunks when braking could be prop shaft.......... |

Title: Re: Clunk from back Post by tonyboy on Nov 16th, 2009, 9:10pm Do i have to raise the wheels and give it a yank to see if it's loose.......... |
||
Title: Re: Clunk from back Post by Highlander on Nov 16th, 2009, 9:16pm if you lift one at a time and try turning them you should feel some play. A jack under the diff will show up any play in the rear bushes |

Title: Re: Clunk from back Post by Jonnycab on Nov 17th, 2009, 12:46am Can you determine if the clunk happens when either the left or right rear wheel goes down a pothole ? :) |
||
Title: Re: Clunk from back Post by Highlander on Nov 17th, 2009, 2:32pm And check your boot! I once had a bad clunk which eventually surfaced as a tin of WD40 rolling about ;D |

It sounds as if it's coming from the passenger side. And no haven't got anything loose in the boot... :) |

Title: Re: Clunk from back Post by lleewar on Nov 17th, 2009, 6:50pm That's funny Tony, mine sounds like it's on the passenger side as well. |

Have you checked the top & bottom shock mounting bolts for tightness ?....... also check the bushes on the droplink that connects the antiroll bar to the suspension arm, as these can perish. Tonyboy, is yours an estate or saloon ?.....if an estate, then the bottom bushes on the shocks are prone to failure due to the bush loosing its grip on the pin & moving sideways & hitting the arm. hope this helps :) |

Title: Re: Clunk from back Post by Highlander on Nov 18th, 2009, 3:12pm The torx bolts holding the driveshafts to the CV joints also have a habit of coming loose, might be worth checking that too |

Title: Re: Clunk from back Post by lleewar on Nov 18th, 2009, 7:24pm Hi All. My "clunk" has just been detected as two caliper bolts totally missing on the rear passenger side and have probably just come loose and fell out. Something I would never have thought of but apparently, according to my local garage, it's something they have seen before!!! |
||
Title: Re: Clunk from back Post by Highlander on Nov 18th, 2009, 7:27pm There only are two! was it hanging loose? |
||
Title: Re: Clunk from back Post by lleewar on Nov 18th, 2009, 7:50pm Thats funny. The garage and the local ford dealership say's that the calipers are held on by four bolts and the two lower ones were missing!!! |
||
Title: Re: Clunk from back Post by lleewar on Nov 18th, 2009, 7:51pm Apparantly the caliper was swinging from side to side!!! |

Hi, but I find that very strange, 1stly your car must've been making some real clatter..and 2nd how u managed to escape with no damge to yourself or others is beyond me. but 3rdly I'd be using Another Garage m8.. I'd think myself a very lucky man if that was me.. ;) ;) All the best.. |

Title: Re: Clunk from back Post by tonyboy on Nov 18th, 2009, 8:16pm Thanks for all the sugestions, I'll jack the car up at the weekend ( weather permiting ) and have a good look about. As for the clunk when braking, thinking about it i had that with my astra and that was because a spring had come off. And JC it's a saloon i have......... Cheers all....... |

Title: Re: Clunk from back Post by lleewar on Nov 18th, 2009, 10:21pm Hi Mick, The clunk was noisy but not continuous and as with Tony, I thought it was something more obvious. Your right about one thing; I must be carrying some luck around with me, the mot came at the right time to discover the problem as it would have been the last thing i would have thought of. Lee |

Title: Re: Clunk from back Post by Jonnycab on Nov 20th, 2009, 12:56am Just a thought....has anyone mentioned the possibility of a broken exhaust bracket, causing the exhaust to bang against something ? :) |

Title: Re: Clunk from back Post by tonyboy on Nov 20th, 2009, 4:01pm Good thinking JC i'll check that as well................. |

Title: Re: Clunk from back Post by lleewar on Nov 21st, 2009, 12:48am Mick, picked up two bolts from Ford and put caliper back together showing no damage and in full working order. Someone is definately shining down on me, as you said, could have been a lot more serious. Lee |

Title: Re: Clunk from back Post by Simmo on Nov 21st, 2009, 7:54am Unless I'm mistaken aren't these bolts meant to have 'threadlock' on them ??. |
||
Title: Re: Clunk from back Post by tlundkvi on Nov 21st, 2009, 8:52am The original setup and recommendation is to use threadlock, as Simmo says. On mine, the second bolt on the RH mount was released with a blowtorch. The LH counterpart needed to be welded off. All thanks to a combination of threadlock, rust and dirt penetrating into the thread. It would be impossible for them to accidentally come off, that's for sure. I would suggest if threadlock is used not to overtighten it (the recommended torque is around 60Nm) if you plan on ever fixing bearings or replacing brake discs :) But that's because I don't have a meter long bar and I don't have a blowtorch/welding equipment. Compressor tools did not help at all when they were seized. Some say you can release and put it back annually to make sure the bolts don't seize. |
||
Title: Re: Clunk from back Post by lleewar on Nov 21st, 2009, 10:51am The bolts I got from Fords did have threadlock on them so they should now be OK. What was in there before I do not know as I have only had the car since June and have not been anywhere near the brakes!! Mick, as to the MOT, no not yet. It failed on CO2 emissions and I am waiting to hear from Pete from Hull or Doug(Solarpanel) to obtain one of their spare ones but having difficulty contacting them!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
