Title: Cossie Stutters at low speed?
Post by gerryw on Nov 17th, 2009, 1:47pm
Hi all,
In the last 5 days my Cossie (1997) has started to 'stutter' (as if the engine is not getting enough fuel)
when I am running at between 30/50 mph with the Cruise control On or Off? It does not stall or anything like that but it seems as if it may at any moment.

Likewise, if I am up past the 60s or put pedal to the metal she responds like always... bye everybody (love this car)!

Can anybody give me some idea as to what it or is causing this (and how to correct it)?

Gerryw p.s. I am going to put this in the problems forum aswell?

Air leak possibly?

check all the hoses from the MAF back, vacuum pipes on the inlet manifolds etc, WD40 will show up any leaks by altering the revs.

Is the idle ok?

Is it running on all cylinders? one or two not firing will make it run rough but it'll hardly be noticeable at high revs

Disconect the multiplug from the EPT ( metalik box above the servo )  and test .

Strangely my Mondeo 24v has been missing over the last few days but I have put that down to an ignition fault that I am in the process of working through ( inbetween torential rain ).

Thanks guys for getting back to me!

I have just returned from a trip I had to make and nursed my Cossie all the way there and back and have just logged in?

Anyway, I will start putting into practice your most welcome ideas as to the cause of the problem and hopefully I will find the cure.

Before getting your replies I thought I might need to take it to a garage to have the ECU checked out (see if the idle setting was out of killter...)?

But I will let you all know how I get on with your ideas before thinking of that (but I will still like to have your thoughts on the ECU and any further ideas on solving the problem, please.

Many regards
Gerryw

not normally ecu fault, more like ecu getting wrong signal from a sensor, just got to find dodgy sensor!!!!

Hi all,

I had a look at where the EGR was located and decided that I was definately not that competent enough to tackle the repair job...?

So 1st of all, approx how much would it cost to get the job done at a garage?

However, I am still hoping that it is one of the other items that you all have indicated may be the problem so I am investing in a OBD 2 Code Reader to see if it will locate the problem and would like to know what OBD 2 would suit my Cossie?

I was looking at at INNOVO 3100? I obviously know that there are some very expensive ones out there but would like to get one that would be between £40/75?

Regards
Gerryw

For the EGR just unplug the multiplug to the EPT, this disables the EGR valve on the back of the engine so you can see if running improves.

I have replaced the coil pack on my Mondy with an old Cossy Scorpio one with no improvement. Plugs are a right pain to change so may not have been done in a long time, so that and my leads are next on the agenda if the rain ever stops.
