Hi everyone. Ever since i had my Clifford alarm installed back in January i use the Clifford remote to open and close the doors. But i notice that if the Clifford alarm is disarmed, then using the ford key manually i can lock the door but for some reason i can't manually unlock it. i've tried the key in the front passenger door but the same thing happen. Any ideas??
I have a '96 2.3lit scorpio saloon.

Normally wrong key / worn locks.
The locks can also seize up due to lack of use, happens a lot these days with fobs. Its good practice to go round the car and use all the locks once a week. ;)

If you have another key, the red one for example, try that. ANY Ford key will LOCK a car but only a correctly fitting one will open it.
Have a read of THIS article (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/doorlockbld.htm). You need to sort this as if the remote fails when the car is locked you are in big trouble. :)

I NEVER use the keyfob, apart from the seemingly endless attention the seem to require I like to use the locks and keep them moving ;D

Hi Stuart.
I am intrigued to read that you never use the Key Fob(s), and a bit puzzled as I've read so much about the door locks not working manually because they are worn, indeed all of my 4 Scorps have this to a greater or lesser degree. I just believed that the previous owners had locked/unlocked the doors with the key with the resulting wear.

With this news I think I shall go out and give all my door locks a good squirt of WD 40.

It isn't so much the locks that wear, it is the key which is usually why when the problems start to occur, it is the unlocking with a key and the ignition that goes first!!

I made sure when I first bought any of my cars that I had a key cut either from the best key available or from the number tag that comes with it. The red key is also a good source for a copied key.

As any ford key will tend to lock a car, even the worn key will work!

Not wishing to hijack the thread but I only got one black key with one of my scorpios and this is now refusing to open the boot lock. I don't have the red key or a spare black key.

Should the worst come to the worst is it possible to get a replacement key from FMD if say, I lost my only key. I realise the PATS module in the key will prevent me from just getting a key cut and using it for anything other than unlocking the doors, hence my concern as to what could be done if that happened.

Just trying to think ahead. Any advice appreciated.

I had the problem of the only key would open the doors and work the ignition but not the boot. At the time I was having battery problems so you can imagine the hassles. had a key cut from the black key at Timpsons, the profile on it was amazing compared to the black one, howver it opens the boot. Really must have a red key cut. Not sure how the key cutting produced a shrper key unless it reads the chip

Hi Bob, I've toyed with the idea of getting a key cut just so that I can at least get into the car should I lose mine, but my main concern is the inability to actually start the car if I lost the key.

At the moment I open the boot with the remote so no real hassle....unless the key goes walkies.

I reckon if a key can be programmed somehow by FMD it isn't going to be cheap at all :o

I can only stress that the cost to have a key cut from scratch as opposed to getting one done from another key doesn't compare. If you have a key, go to Fords and get another black and a red done. I also had a credit card key cut (I bought the blank one on EBay) and kept that in my wallet which meant I could at least get into the car.

Once, while working in Birmingham, my son went out to the car to get something from the boot. He dropped the keys into the boot and shut it. It was the only key I had to the car and the car was double locked. The solution? The AA couldn't get in so I ended up putting the rear passenger window through and ripping the back seat out (That was also locked inside the boot) to get to the key. After that, I had 2 keys cut the moment I bought a new Scorpio.

I even had an extra electronic key cut when I bought my S Class because they are a pig to start!!

If you only have one key, go tomorrow and buy some spares..... you never know when you will need that spare key!

I think as Baz says its the keys that get worn but the locks WILL seize up if they dont get used.

I like to use all the locks regularly just in case.

How many times have we had people come the forum over the years after being locked out by a failed remote battery..

If the keys dont work in the locks and you're only unlocking method is the remote its only a matter of time till the battery goes and you're stuck

Never had a scorpio with a remote fob that actually worked ::). Cant go wrong with a key ( until it wears out of course ) ::) ;) ;D

Just had a quote for £49 to have a new key cut from a local shop. They say they just need to black key with the transponder to do this and if I have another spare made at the same time it will be £39 for the extra.

I'll have to ring the local FMD's and see how they compare.

Timpson will do it for around £50 or less if you do not want it as a chipped key

just had a chiped key cut and cloned from parts dealer 24£ enc vat

I do believe that I will now sort out my Scorpio locks and keys and stop relying on Fobs so much. Fortunatly all of my Scorps (4) have at least one door that operates satifactorally(can't spell "satisfactorily ???) on the key

Got to agree, one door being key operational is not satisfactory and therefor I am spurred into action. I will tackle the problem if only this rain would give us a break :-/
