Title: Cossie 24v Accelerator cable
Post by Oliver on Nov 30th, 2009, 10:46pm
When backing out of the drive last Saturday I found that the accelerator felt harder to press than normal and did not open the throttle on the engine. It looks like its taking up the slack when observing the cable at the throttle body but not actually opening the throttle itself.

I traced the cable route and it does a full lap of the engine bay and passes through an electronic device to the right of the radiator.

Before I start pulling it apart does anyone have an idea as to what may be going wrong?.  I have noticed that the accelerator felt a bit sticky recently but it only happend the first time I pressed the accelerator in the morning.

hi oliver

long time, no see! ;)

the cable passes though the traction control motor. we've had a few issues in the past with that seizing up.

you could try dis-connecting the cable here and pulling on it to see if the throttle opens.

Is the thing next to the rad not the cruise control unit which also has a cable on the throttle body.

Yes it has been a while and the Cossie has been neglected a bit as I use another vehicle for work most of the time.

Thanks for the drawings. It's a long time since I used the TIS software and forgot what I need to do to make it work.

I think you may have the right idea about the traction control unit. I wondered what that unit was and why the cable passed through it.  Is there an explanation anywhere as to how it works? I'll try and open it up and take a look.

The battery had gone very low due to lack of use and although I had charged it up fully I wonder if that may have upset the system. I might try just disconnecting and reconnecting the battery first to see if that clears it up. Otherwise I hope a squirt of WD40 does the trick!

the cable passes through traction control module and cruise control module on way to engine via a big circle. if you take outer casing off each module the fault should be easy to see. prob lack of use.there should be one module each side of rad.  as said b4 wd40 works wonders!!

If you need to adjust the cable look at the cable just behind the rad - there is a white conduit with a metal clip and the cable casing is slotted inside this conuit - remove the clip - pull the cable out a bit and push the clip back in - voila - one taught cable again.

Just to add, the actual cable is now discontinued at Ford - to look after the one you've got!

Thanks for all the tips. I will probably tackle it on Saturday morning when I can work on it in daylight. Here's hoping its something simple.

Thank you. Hopefully I won't need it but it's reassuring to know there's one out there.  It's not something you would want to try and send through the post though! It must be about 20 feet long in total.

It was indeed the traction control motor. I don't know exactly what was causing the problem but a liberal dose of WD40 and manually rotating the internal parts and it freed off and is working OK now.  There is a piece missing off the plastic cover so I daresay damp had got inside.

Thanks everyone especially scorpio_man for the diagrams.
