HI,

From my recent post on here you may be aware of a gearbox problem I am currently experiencing on my 2.9 24v Cosworth. I'm not entirely convinced that the gearbox needs to stripping down and someone suggested checking MAF sensor and gearbox oil level.

The problem is how do you measure the gear box oil in the 24v?

The dipstick shows min/max marks and on the other side says 86 Deg C.

I know to check the oil when Park is engaged, but do you do this when it is cold or at temp (niether will be the temp on the dip stick!)?

I've checked it when I've given the car a long run and it's hot and the dip stick shows no oil. When cold it show's plenty of oil.

Advice welcome ;D

So if I'm not seeing any oil on the dipstick when the car is at temperature and hot, I don't have enough oil? :-/

If that's the case then the garage that replaced the oil did not put enough back in! >:(

OR you have a LEAK! which is quite possible, there are several places to check for leaks , but the first place is the cooler pipes that go to the radiator at the front . It is well documented and a very easy job to replace the leaking section. HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/coolerpipes.htm). the other place is either the front or back seal but they don't seem to leak very often. Top it up first and see what happens.

If no oil is on the stick when hot ,it is surprising that the box works properly.Obviouly there is no point in checking the level without the engine running because all the oil is in the sump.
