Title: water leak
Post by big_timer on Jan 19th, 2010, 5:04pm
a friend who drives a 1997 2.0 16v scorp came to the house today.he says hes got a water leak and doesnt know where.so i went and had a look.i put a least 4 2litre bottles of water in the expasion bottle only to look down to see the water on the ground.under further investigation there seems to be a large leak coming from the back/top of the engine at the bulkhead, near the egr pipe.i had no mirror to see where but it seems to be a signifigant leak.
he told me that the thought that the engine had froze during the cold spell and had no anti freeze in the system also that it was leaking fom the top up expansion bottle screw cap.
does any of you geniuses have any idea where the water is coming from?whether there are pipes or hoses near the area that might have split or maybe core plugs that have blew.any advice would be appreciated as he is in two minds whether to scrap it

thank you

A core plug is likely if it had no anti-freeze. Scroll down this page for core plug locations:

Do people really take such risks to save a tenner or two?

thanks for your rapid replies lads
i had a look at the core plug locations on the 2.0 ltr but the water seems to be coming from above the location of rear plug and running down .

Most likely a matrix hose has split then, probably the outlet hose, as that's the one that runs behind the EGR, around the N/S inner wing & into the engine at the back of the water pump  :)

There are the pictures of the heater hoses and associated parts shown HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/matrix.htm) which might help locating which one has gone!
