Title: 2.9 Cosworth Failed Emissions tests, need help
Post by Holland389 on Feb 9th, 2010, 6:18pm
I bought the car recently (very cheap) and new I'd need work but so far parts are running at £500.  I keep failing MoT on emissions.  They were at 0.8 on the MoT, New Plugs, fresh fuel, oil change and additive have dropped this to 0.4.  I need to get to 0.2.  The car had been stood for almost 12 months when i bought it.  I have changed an exhaust sensor so now all sensors are working.  The car has only 'ticked over' recently and I think the Cats might not be working.  Can anyone help.  I bought the car for £500 and my repairs are at £600 with labour.  105k miles on the clock so I am very pleased as I wanted one of these and i got the green one.

Welcome!

Cats are very cheap on UK ebay or www.buypartsby.com, it pays off to have a look. Have you had a chance to scan the car? What kind of additive did you use? I wasted 2 bottles of Forte on my 24V, it cleaned the injectors, but not enough to keep emissions lower than the limit. A cat change was the only solution. What were your other emission readings? Was it only the CO that was high?

:)  Hi Holland389.  Just a thought,  I note that your car has been standing for 12 months and you say that she has only been ticking over recently, so I suggest that you take her for a good hard drive keeping the revs up (you don't have to break any speed limits to do this) in order to get the Cats up to temperature and to give them a good clear-out.  Take her to the Testing Station when she is good and hot.  This may make all the difference  :)

Good luck    8)

I second Nunnspoet's advice.
On two of my previous scorpio's MOT's emissions failed when cold.  Luckily I knew the testers and they let me drive the car up the Parkway at Sheffield and a jaunt along one junction of the M1 and bring back the same day.  When did this the car passed both times. If the previous MOT has expired make sure you are booked in for an MOT first though and are literally doing it just before the test and could reasonably be considered travelling to the test centre or you could be in lumber if anything goes wrong.
