Title: Start up shudder
Post by mikeb on Feb 9th, 2010, 7:11pm
Hi All,
I have a 98 2.3 auto estate.  During the recent cold weather the car wouldn't start.  The RAC man reported that although their was a 12v supply the fuel injector had initially no switching and there was no spark. He gave the battery a charge and wiggled the fuses in the battery fuse box.  He then hooked up his computer he reported nothing untoward and the car then started.  He was unable to give a reason for the non start but suggested I replace the 5.5 year old 515cca battery.  Each time I started, prior to replacing the battery (640cca) it was ok except on one occasion when the car started, then shuddered and spluttered at about 5mph until I stopped.  I switched off and almost immediately started up again without any problems.  The shuddering and spluttering event has happened once again since changing the battery.  My initial thoughts are to change the fuel filter which I am pretty sure has not been changed since new and could be a contributory factor as now over 124,000 miles on the clock.  All advice and suggestion gratefully accepted.

Mike.
See if you can borrow a fuel pump relay just for a start, the green and violet one in the aux box.
