Title: My Scorpio rumbles badly
Post by Tekno on Feb 11th, 2010, 12:31pm
Hello

I'm experiencing bad rumble when driving rough roads. On smooth tarmac and pavement, and also in high speeds, I don't notice anything.  Which things can cause that?

Every possible bush from FRONT have been replaced with new ones. Rear differential is also changed, but didn't affect at this problem at all.

And same thing on another tires and tire pressures. 1 Broken front wheel bearing have been changed.

How do I inspect if rear anti roll bar is okay? Does it have bushes like in front?

It's very difficult to locate it. Sound comes "everywhere" :(

humm. could be. But I don't hear any clunking etc. Just constant rumble when on rough road (gravel etc), sound is like coming from subwoofer :D lol 70-80hz or something?

Definitely not. They are in good shape now.

Tekno.
Is it a 12valve by any chance?if the gearbox mounting gets soft or collapses, the left hand front exhaust pipe rumbles against the cross tie bar.Or could it just be that your ears are getting more sensitive, and it's normal road noise ?  ;)

It's a -98 2.3 16V estate. I don't believe it's just a road noise as it's so loud.

TYRES!  Had terrible noise once with one set of tyres I bought, when I changed them the noise went lived with it for months ..... Try changing the wheels round it sometimes helps. If everything else has been checked out and confirmed not to be the problem.

I once had a clunk sound when braking and I checked EVERYTHING I could think of, finally found the problem by accident when I took my front wheel off for cleaning, it turned out to be the  spring that holds the brake pad in, it had slipped out at one end and was allowing the pad to slap against the caliper body on release, it was like that for months.

Some sounds can be annoyingly hard to pinpoint.  ::)

Do you change the shock absorber or just the bushes....

While searching for any interesting, I made a discovery:

That rubber part around shock absorper has gone bad:

Any way to fix that easily?

So it's an estate then, the shocker appears to be not central in the spring,is the spring busted?

Agree with GOZZ - that spring looks a bit sick  :-/

Tekno, I have a set of estate springs, virtually unused (bought and installed in error but replaced quickly to correct ones) if you need.

I have a little bit feeling of that shock absorber is not properly attached to top? Or is it not possible?   ::)

It could be possible, it should at least be quite easy to check behind the trim.
