Title: fuel gauge temperamental
Post by lebelbelshaw on Mar 11th, 2010, 7:18am
Firstly i would like to say hello to everyone on in this fourm. :)

I have recently bought a ford scorpio 2.0 16v and the fuel gauge doesn't work sometimes.
I have noticed that in the morning it always shows the correct amount of fuel, but when i start the car in the evening it doesn't move.

In some cases i have also found that the fuel gauge will show full when i know there is only 3/4 of a tank.

If anyone can shed some light on this problem i would really appreciate it.
Good job i have the trip computer  ;D

Maybe a damaged float in the sender arm? I have seen brand new full assemblies on uk ebay for £30.

If that had been the case permanently I'd have said to check the fuel tank for damage, if it has been pushed up from below by a rock etc it will show fuller than it is.

used to be a dodgy car sales trick, looked like it had a full tank! :)

ok and how about fitting it easy or hard.

you need to drop the tank as it fits in from the top, simple enough though if the bolts aren't seized :)

ok thanks for that one last question are the pump and sender one unit or can you replace just the sender ?

And if it is one unit is the pump likley to be on its way out or am i ok leaving this job until its a bit warmer.

The fuel pump and sender is one unit. Check for heavy rust on the tank straps before dropping it, they may not be good enough to reuse.

The pump has nothing to do with how fuel level is reported. In case you get fuel to the engine when there's fuel in the tank, I would not worry too much. The fuel pump is not on it's way according to your description.

My fuel sender shows constantly 15 liters too little, I just have to bear with it until I can motivate myself to just fix it :)

If it's any consolation,I've had one like that for years,it seldom goes to the top,and there is always plenty left when the light is on,I just do 300 miles on the trip, then fill it up and zero the trip, you just get used to it.
