Check the multi-plug connector near the main fuse box is located correctly.
If its not fitted properly it can cause all sorts of problems.

Also check the light switch itself. the pins at the back of the switch have been known to cause similar problems

The main fusebox connector,if not properly fitted as Mike says, can be the source of such problems. The details and photo's are now in the new 'How to do things' section. Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=admin;action=display;num=1267895931) ;)

David, mine had all sorts of comparable erratic problems.
Yes when the big multiplug is not properly placed you may have these + windshield wipers not working etc.
But if you have not touched said multiplug than the cause probably is in the infamous connectorblock C 110.

In a LHD verhicle it sits underneath the lefthand Fusebox, hard to come by under the dash, cutting through the rainwell and, at one time, when during a trip the electric windows would not go up again, I could cure the problems by just ramming a 1.5 L Cokebottle up hitting some connectors back in place.

So it's the one opposite the battery fusbox.

Here's the page + pics.

Loosen all its connectors, spray clean them and replace. Worked for me.

HTH,
Ray

It says "connectors that have corroded since 1998, the last production year" does that mean earlier ones are different?

well folks ,the scorpio has survived again ,it turned out to be the switch multiplug number 15 not conecting .I just closed the gap up with a small screw driver and every  thing works again ...Thank you very much people you saved another scorpio from the bin .

I take it you mean pin 15 to the lighting switch?. If so that is the usual culprit. ;)
