Title: Rear Axle Gator
Post by macw on Mar 28th, 2010, 6:39pm
Hi

My R Reg 2.3 Ultima Estate had a strange hot rubber smell at the rear. I checked the tyres then looked underneath and one of the gators had caught itself up with the drive shaft and twisted itself round. It was only about a year since the entire rear drive was dropped for welding the chassis above.

Has anyone any experience of replacing the gator and familiar with the "special tools" needed.
The old girl has 164K and the start of the seals leaking on the Auto box (cattle grid) and its aircon was destroyed by Quick Fit (I was in a hurry to have it regassed and they were the only people who could do it and just after a re-gas the compressor ceased up, I suspect through failure to relubricate). With this in mind I don't want an enormous bill. I have a low mileage 2.9 saloon to donate bits. It only get used for transporting my father and wheelchair.

Any advice would be appreciated. Also if you know a good mechanic with Scorpio knowledge near Basingstoke, Hampshire I might need a hand.

Thanks Mark :)

You would need a star or hexagon bit, according to type,to remove the retaining bolts for the CV joints, and circlip pliers to remove the shaft from the CV joint. There were at one time gaiters available after market, whereby they could be fitted without removing anything, they were cut so they could be passed over the shaft and CV,then the two edges glued together. You can use ratchet straps to retain them, but proper clips are preferential. The 12 valve has bigger CV joints than the 2.3,and bigger bolts, they are not interchangeable.
