Title: Diff? clunking
Post by Tekno on Apr 28th, 2010, 9:38pm
Hello

When I press accelerator pedal, I hear a clunk from somewhere rear.  It comes also when I lift foot from pedal.

What that could be? Differential bushes?

I changed differential and driveshafts 4 months ago but backplate is still same as before.

Could be wear in the differential teeth, i did a write up on how to remove it in the how to do things section

may be a worn prop rubber 'doughnut'

could it be the pedal its self clunking?

Humm what teeth you mean?

I'm pretty sure sound comes from somewhere at rear axle

I would think that it is more likely to be the prop shaft universal joint. Easy check if you go under the car and move the prop, movement in the universal joint will be obvious.

If you mean BIG gear, it were fine when I checked em on december. I couldn't find any suspicious wear.. Diff was opened because I changed backplate and axles which is held by circlips inside diff.

If all this has been disturbed before, sure there are no nuts loose?

No seriously

I'd check the CV joints first of all, even if its not worn the bolts have been known to work loose ;)

That's the sort of thing ~ what made me think of it, a tiny bit of rotation one way, a tiny bit the other

I've found possible cause. Outer left CV joint.

It has massive play up and down.

I always use pattern parts for CV joints and gaiters, don't forget the 16v cars have a smaller joint than 2.9s and diesels.
