Title: 'Limp Mode?'
Post by Robin.M on May 2nd, 2010, 1:23pm
Scorpio Gia X TD Auto. 1998 100K
Engine suddenly developed a hesitation (or cut-out) in running - otherwise perfect. Cleaned MAF & checked & cleaned all wiring connections. Still the same. Engine overheating  warning light now showing on dash although temp is normal.  Car runs smoothly but no acceleration. Ford suggested Camshaft Position Senser - bought one for £25 but cannot see where it goes. Is there a 'Limp Mode' which the car will go into if a warning light shows?

Other Ford sugestion was the Crankshaft Position Senser @£85. I checked the connection to this and when I unpluged it there may have been water in the plug. I don't mind buying this senser - but any thoughts before I do & where does the CPS go? & where to look to cure the Temp Warning Light?

Search for CKP in this PDF, you'll find a few sketches:

It is the Camshaft Position Senser to be found. All the connections appear to be dry- thought I should buy the non-lithium grease from Partco Finis 5 030 18, and work through all the connections as a start.

Thanks for the replies, weather permitting will start again from your diagrams.

I had the impression that diesels do not have a camshaft position sensor...  And there is no limp mode either...

The temp light comes on only when coolant level is too low... correct me if it is not the case

By the way I have been struggling with the same symptoms although i have a manual box not auto.

Changed the CKP with no success of healing the symptoms... let us know if U have success of resolving your problem and how was it made...

The older man at Partco just smiled and took the CPS back and returned the £25 to the card. I am convinced it is the MAF but the Finis no: 0 281 002 164 is proving difficult to find other than a new unit. I did find a new Crankshaft Position Senser on Ebay for £25 and bought it just in case - its in a Ford sealed bag with the correct Finis no. Will keep you posted on results.

You are very lucky,  Sanderson Fords near me wont accept the return of items that have anything to do with electric even if they haven't been fitted.

Quite likely though a 2nd hand one is no better, being similar age, or not 100% functional (?)
