Title: metal plate between the gearbox and starter motor
Post by tiggerlit on Jun 27th, 2010, 3:39am
hi guys wondered if you can help
ive got a r reg 2.3 auto ultima estate and when you start it up you can hear a rattling sound on tick over but if you put rev it slightly it stops sounds like something lose. the garage where i had my mot done said its the metal plate that sits between the gearbox and starter motor, and if i dont get it fixed then the starter motor will get stuck or wont work.
but he says ill have to take the gearbox out and reweld it.
ive looked on my manual disc and cant find a pic of what hes talking about.
does anyone know what hes talking about, as i could really do without this as this week, for the mot ive had to buy track rod ends and rear calipers, and now i have to get a radiator and steering rack. and im trying to save money for my wedding in september.
also do you know if this website has a club as i would like to join.
thanks everyone
becki xox

There is no 'Club' as such. As you will know the website is free to all and is kept going by donations from those who use it. From time to time various meetings take place around the Country and you will see those 'advertised'on the Meetings page. These events are a great way to meet informally and many  lasting friendships have been formed as a result. Equally they are a great opportunity to get your car looked at by an experienced member and in some case 'scanned' for faults. There is no 'location' on your profile but if you indicate there or on the site where you are located you may find that there are others in the area.  I'm afraid I can't answer your query re the 'fault'.

tiggerlit.
The tin plate is basically there to act as a cover for the lower part of the flywheel housing,it has a cut through it on the opposite side to the starter motor to facilitate fitting,it traps behind the starter flange and cannot come loose unless the starter is off,and even then, is held by so many other bolts that it could not come adrift. The starter pinion that turns the engine is further back behind the plate and clear of it,thus I cannot see how it can foul the pinion.Best get further advice from someone impartial. There is a possibility that the catalytic coverter is becoming loose on the inside and rattling on tickover.
ps. Could the mechanic be referring to the coupling plate bolted to the back of the crankshaft which carries the torque convertor, these have been known to crack and break up causing loss of drive, this is uncommon but possible.                                        GOZZ.

hiya thanks for that, that is what we were thinking that it could be the cat, as last night i was reading the other section to this website called fault finding and that was saying the cat. i hope it is as it will be alot easier then trying to take the gearbox out. also on the advisory sheet for the mot it says the exhaust is really corroded and has been a advisory for the last 3 years.
thanks again

hi thanks for the pic we think it is the cat as it tends to do it only on tick over when the engine is hot. the car drives perfect which is why we thought it would be strange to be anything major.
thanks again for the help. xoxox

It's a Highland tradition, (aye the real Highlands) that when visiting in the Highlands, the visitor kisses all locals in the pub, and buy's a round of drinks!!!
