Title: white smoke, and lots of it
Post by mikesone on Jul 6th, 2010, 4:33pm
So there I was 120 in the fast lane and the gearbox decided to slip into neutral, a bit scary to say the least, over the next couple of months, it got more and more frequent and not all at high speed, and it would klunk back into gear, I cleaned the maf sensor to no avail so, eventually changed the gearbox for a 'good' second hand one.
Got it all back together and when I started the engine, after a minute or so, it started with thick white smoke from the exhaust and from where the EGR is located into the exhaust manifold. I may have disturbed it when I changed the gearbox. All the plugs and connections are ok and I didn't have any spare nuts and bolts when I had finished, could it be a head gasket and if so, which one, is there any way to tell?
It's a Scorpio Ultima 24v cossie and it's my baby and I hate having to drive round in something else, please get me back on the road.......

Might just be water sitting in the exhaust? was it sitting out in the rain while you changed the box??

Have you run it for long or driven it at all since it started?

coolant level ok?

EGR shouldnt be leaking, try and fix the leak.

Compression test would be your best bet to test the head gasket theory

Had another wee think about this...

Is your transmission fluid disappearing??

I filled the transmission and drove it around the block, that was when the smoke screen followed me, I've redipped the fluid and it has gone down, but perhaps that's just the level settling. I notice that the smoke does not start immediately I start the engine, it's about 40 seconds delay, as if something is getting up to pressure and then letting go. Will fill the fluid again.

Is it coming from the exhaust or under the car ?  are the oil cooler pipes tight ?

The smoke comes out of the exhaust, it's not steam it's white smoke also the egr pipe is is smoking where it comes out of the exhaust manifold

the gearbox problem and white smoke may be connected and if so your original box may be ok...

I'm not up on gearboxes but isnt there a vacuum from the manifold that controls the box??

I think if the rubber diaphragm in the vacuum bursts you will draw transmission oil into the manifold...

Am I on the right track?

Wheres Dave2302 when you need him! ;D

I dont think the 24v box has the vac unit  ? the 16v box hasnt got one

Has your brake fluid level dropped ?

Are you checking it correctly?

Yeah, sory in Poole picking up boat for a mate lol,

No modulator on 24V Scorpio Box unless a very early one of a handful.....

Sounds like breather pipe from top rear end of trans has somehow been connected up to manifold incorrectly.

Took her out last night in the dark so plod wouldn't notice and, after about 3 miles down the motorway, low and behold, the smoke stopped and has not returned. I have no idea what caused it, but the gearbox change was done under cover and we havent had any rain for about 3 weeks. All fluid levels remain constant and she is back to her normal self again.
Thanks to everyone who tried to help
Love having my Scorpio back :)
